Screeching for Attention

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 30 May, 2007

I received an funny e-mail from a customer the other day
I’d like to share. Although I highly recommend testing and
practicing using your self defense products, this “training
session” could have ended badly.

“I purchased a Mace Screecher for my wife a few weeks back.
One day I decided to sneak up on her in the mall parking
lot. I didn’t think she saw me coming and I playfully
grabbed her arm and yelled Hey. Apparently she saw someone
coming and had her alarm ready right before I approached.
She turned around and let me have it good. After my head
stopped ringing we both had a good laugh. Good thing for me
I didn’t buy her pepper spray too…”

I’m counting on she saw him coming and knowingly let him
have it. Perhaps not, but I’d love to hear her side.
Regardless, it’s nice to see the alarm isn’t going to waste.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you,
but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could
be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection

well-being?

Inside the Criminal Mind: Home Burglary

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 23 May, 2007

It does not matter where you live. Middle-class suburbs,
high-class condos, low-income housing, your home is a
target. A burglar with his mind set on your house will walk
through your front door, crawl through a window or even
smash a sledge hammer through your roof.

I recently came across an interview of a reformed burglar
who was extremely prolific in his day, breaking into about
60 homes with a grand total of tens of thousands of dollars
of jewelry and electronics. Of course, he has now vowed to
lead a more law-abiding lifestyle. Probably due to the fact
he is serving house arrest and will say anything. Speaking
of saying anything, he also decided to spill the beans on
tactics and secrets of the trade of burglarizing homes.

The burglars already know, but this knowledge may be of
great benefit to a clueless homeowner.

The following are some of the highlights from inside the
mind of a criminal:

Point of Entry:

Windows – French windows, roll outs, weak metal frames (many
times the windows can be put back in or reclosed once
burglar has entered, leaving homeowners to wonder how their
home was broken into)

Roof – Apparently a sledge hammer through the back of the
roof is an increasingly common point of entry. Who’d have
thought?

Front Door – Popped hinges, weak wooden frame or an unlocked
door (come on, let’s not make it that easy!)

Alarm Systems:

No Problem – Cut the phone line on the side of the house.
Contact to the alarm company is now snipped…

Surveillance Systems:

Time Consuming – Not often worth the trouble, unless main
power shutoff is available…

Time of Crime:

Broad daylight, between noon and three, in and out within a
half-hour. Weekends were not desirable.

Prep Work:

Neighborhood scoped out for about a week – who lives there,
how many people, notable routine, kids or pets, married or
single…

Usually wears a worker’s outfit… Handy man, Meter Reader,
Utility Company. You’d be surprised what is available at the
Goodwill shops.

Target:

Jewelry, Electronics, Money

With a burglary occurring on average every 15 seconds, it
would be foolish to leave your home attractive to those
creeps looking for an easy buck. Curb appeal is fine. Plant
pretty flowers, paint your fence, mow your lawn. But
Burglar Appeal is best left off your to do list.

Not All Criminals Wear Signs

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 22 May, 2007

A couple weekends ago, Walmart shoppers were greeted by
convicted shoplifters in Attalla, Alabama. Wearing sandwich
board signs stating “I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart”,
they stood outside for several hours each, reminding patrons
that shoplifting is a crime. The judge ordering the people
to do this felt this embarrassment was worth avoiding a
60-day jail sentence. The store manager also approved of
this idea and stated that most of the feedback on the
situation was positive.

Although I am not sure I totally agree with skipping the
jail time in exchange for two four-hour stints as a sidewalk
billboard, I do like the idea of criminals wearing signs. Or
maybe bells around their necks to boot. It would be great if
that guy walking in the general direction of your car while
pumping gas after dark was wearing a “I am a thief” sign.
Or the other approaching bad guy trying to sneak up on you
with a forewarning jingling noise from several yards away.
Sadly, this is not and never will be the case as the typical
warning you will receive is a loud and harsh “Give me your
keys and wallet!”

I’m not saying you need to be paranoid of every stranger
that walks by, but you probably could stand to increase your
awareness of your environment. Don’t worry, most people
are in the same complacent boat. Most people are surprised
or realize that something bad is going to happen too late.
Even then it is a toss up whether or not the person is
prepared in any way to deal with what is about to happen.

It is that little bit of controlled paranoia that prevents
many bad things from happening. Like a spidey-sense, warning
of danger. We can’t all get bit by a radioactive spider
like Peter Parker, but most of us occasionally get the
feeling something is not right. Listen to that feeling.
Even if you think you are too busy. That little voice in
your head or gut might save your life.

It wouldn’t hurt to pack some pepper spray or a stun gun
for the times you listen a few moments too late.

Locked and Loaded Too Late?

Posted by Rob on Monday, 21 May, 2007

Three people were brutally murdered after their home was
invaded and a killer stabbed the family to death in
Lancaster County, PA. Local authorities urged people to lock
their doors and turn on lights in an attempt to deter
further attacks as the killer is still at large. There are
no suspects in the killings as of yet.

Many people in the area have hit the local sporting goods
and security shops in droves to purchase guns, pepper sprays
and home security systems. It is unfortunate that it takes a
“Killer on the Loose” warning to persuade folks to protect
themselves and their loved ones.

This is a wake up call to all those residents that thought
it could not happen in my neighborhood. At minimum,
hopefully people are locking doors and windows at night.
Perhaps a motion detector on the lights in the front of the
house. Better yet, all of the above as well as arming
themselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to
properly protect themselves.

It should not take an act of crime close to home to spur
your interest in taking to proper safety precautions. The
police reported that the house was not locked at the time
the killings occurred. After the fact, nothing can change
what happened. We cannot lock their doors now, or install a
security system now, or arm them with a gun or pepper spray
now. For them, it is too late.

However, now is the time for you to take the self-defense of

The Illusion of Security

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 16 May, 2007

What would it take to make you feel safe and secure? A
security alarm system? A surveillance camera? There are
various products designed to do just that, make you feel
safe. Some work, some don’t, and some appear to work even
if they are not actually functional. But that is part of the
illusion of security. If it appears to be protected, or
looks like too much trouble, a potential criminal may pass
it by and look for an easier target.

Self defense 101. Look alert and project a confident
demeanor. Appear to be a harder target and a lesser
assailant may look to prey elsewhere. Security 101. Have a
visible keypad or security camera prominently displayed with
a flashing red LED light and a would be robber may think
twice about tangling with the nuisance of a security alarm.
As long as no one knows that the security devices are fake,
everything is fine. Right?

There are many types of deceptive security devices and fake
security cameras that give the impression of a fully
functional system. They are cheaper to buy, easier to
install and have almost zero maintenance. As long as they
look realistic enough, they may work, most of the time.
Until someone makes a mistake, and lets the cat out of the
bag. Just like a magician that ends up exposing his secret
to the audience. The illusion is over. Let me explain two
real world examples of how a good idea became a poor
security practice. First, we have a small convenience store
in a not-so-wonderful neighborhood. The owner had a few
instances of vandalism and theft and decided to do something
about it. He found that it would be much cheaper to buy a
fake security camera instead of a full video surveillance
and recording system. He purchased a realistic looking
camera that would screw mount to the ceiling and required a
9-volt battery to power the red LED light to complete the
illusion of a fully functional system.

http://www.worthprotectionsystems.com

Problem is, he made one grave mistake. Lured by the low
price, he decided the more cameras he purchased, the more
secure his store would appear. Right? Wrong. When he
installed 20 fake security cameras into his small
convenience store, the “system” screamed fake, and was
proven to be, as the over abundance of flashing cameras
failed to deter troublemakers from causing the same havoc as
before.

Another well-intentioned, but poorly carried out example is
another local business. This one was a small, but lucrative
medical practice that could have easily afforded a complete
security system. Which is what it looked like they had…
until…

So I ended up with an 8:30 am appointment, which was when
they opened up for the day. I showed up at 8:15 am, assuming
they would be there earlier then my scheduled appointment
time. I was wrong, the door was still locked and no one was
there. I could see their security keypad just inside the
locked door, fully equipped with an LED. 5 minutes later
another 8:30 am patient arrived early, again to the locked
door.

8:35 rolls around and the receptionist finally arrives and
apologizes for running late. As soon as she unlocks the
door, the alarm system starts its warning beep sequence,
giving you the standard 30-60 seconds to enter the code
before the alarm actually goes off. Ignoring the beeping,
the receptionist continues on to unlock the inner double
door. The other patent jokingly says, “You need to hurry
up, the police are going to show up,” with a smile.
“Don’t worry” reassures the receptionist, “The alarm
isn’t even hooked up to anything!” she says with a laugh.
I just stood there, shaking my head, wondering how many
other patients knew this secret. I’d wager a bet the owner
doesn’t know his illusion is up.

So what is the moral to these stories? Don’t settle on
illusions and buy the real products? Not necessarily, even
the fake security measures are viable to some extent. But
make perfectly sure that your secret magic tricks are kept
secret. As long as your illusions are still believable or
unknown, your secret is safe. As well as your business or
home.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you,
but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could
be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection
to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal
well-being?

Stay safe and be prepared!

Spice Up Your Self Defense with the Firepower of Pepper Spray!

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 15 May, 2007

The “heat” or “hotness” of chili peppers and consequently pepper
sprays is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU) or the Scoville
scale, named after the American chemist Wilbur Scoville. The
presence of the chemical capsaicin is responsible for this
pleasant or unpleasant degree of heat, depending on if you are
talking to a hot wings connoisseur or an assailant with pepper
spray dripping from his face.

https://worthprotectionsecurity.com/peppersprays.htm

For all you culinary folks or chili eaters, a sweet bell pepper
is rated 0, containing no capsaicin. A pimento or pepperoncini
is only mildly spicier with a 100-500 SHU rating. Green pepper
Tabasco sauce may yield 600-800, regular pepper Tabasco at 2500-
5000, and super spicy habanero Tabasco sauce topping out at 7000-
8000 SHU. Widely popular jalapeno peppers rate around 2500-8000.
BAM! Pure cayenne pepper typically packs enough capsaicin to
reach 30,000-50,000, compared to more exotic 50,000-80,000 Thai
peppers. Speaking of more exotic peppers, a Naga Jolokia pepper
from India ranges from 850,000 to 110,000 and a Dorset Naga may
reach 1,600,000 SHU, or 1.6 million units of fiery mouth burning
hotness!

Capsaicin in its purest form has a Scoville rating that ranges
from 15,000,000 to 16,000,000. Yes, that reads 16 million! The
standard grade pepper sprays in the US usually achieve 2 to 5
million SHUs.

Pepper sprays are inflammatory, unlike Mace which is an irritant.
Inflammatory agents will cause immediate closure of the eyes and
will induce coughing, choking and nausea. Temporary blindness
due to dilation of the eyes and the mucous membranes will swell
up, effectively preventing all but life support breathing.

The effects may last from 20-45 minutes depending on the pepper
spray’s strength. Popular pepper spray products, such as Pepper
Shot
are rated at 10% strength, boasting a SHU of 2 million. The
Wildfire 18% contains enough Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) to achieve
nearly 3 million Scoville Heat Units of stopping power. Bear
strength Guard Alaska
requires a higher concentration for those
that venture into the woods, with at least a 20% concentration
of capsicum firepower.

There are even triple action self defense sprays incorporating
OC pepper, CN tear gas, and a UV marking dye. This potent
combination sends your assailant into an uncontrollable fit of
coughing and choking while his eyes are slammed shut. The CS
tear gas causes a profuse tearing to the already affected eyes,
as well as an intense burning sensation to the face. The UV
marking dye marks the assailant and may assist in identification
once apprehended.

Conveniently, many pepper sprays come on key chains. This is a
good idea since most people will usually have their keys with
them. But don’t forget about the times you don’t have your
keys. The small investment in additional pepper spray may save
your life or the life of a loved one! Then you will also always
have your pepper spray within easy reach. You can also find
covert pepper spray products such as pepper batons (kubotans),
pepper pagers, lipstick spray, “Stunning Ring“, and hand weight
Hot Walkers for walking and jogging
. Pepper spray is also sold
in gel stream formulas instead of liquid sprays. Gels have the
advantages of longer distance, stronger pepper, very sticky on
the target’s face and less contaminating overspray.

However, the best, strongest, and farthest ranged pepper spray in
the world will amount to the SHU rating of that bell pepper if
you fail to do three simple things: purchase some pepper spray,
carry your pepper spray wherever you go and practice using it.
This means buying extra pepper spray and actually “waste” it by
discharging practice sprays to gauge the range of your product
and improve your spraying accuracy. If you are going to under
shoot or hit the wall next to an attacker, you mind as well pack
your pockets with pimentos. Of course, with the affordability
of peppered self defense products and the peace of mind you gain
by being prepared, if you do ever find yourself in a pepper, err
pickle… you can hardly consider it a waste.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but
the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth
more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your
belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Don’t be afraid to spice up your self defense, stay safe and be
prepared!

Statistically Speaking…

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 15 May, 2007

Self Defense is worth thinking about.

Don’t get a false sense of security because nothing has
happened to you yet.

Statistically speaking, it is not a matter of IF, it is a
matter of WHEN.

Homicide – 16,137 a year; 44 a day; and average of 2 people
are murdered every hour.

Rape – 209,880 a year; 575 a day; an average of 24 people
are raped each hour.

Assault – 4,470,960 a year; 12,249 a day; and average of
510 people are assaulted each hour.

Theft – 14,211,940 a year; 38,937 a day; and an average
1,622 thefts are committed each hour.

Domestic Violence – 588,490 women a year; 1,612 a day; an
average of 67 women are victimized every hour.

Burglary – 3,427,690 a year; 9,391 a day; an average of 391
homes are burblarized every hour.

Identity Fraud – 9,300,000 a year, 25,479 a day; 1,062
people are victims of identify fraud every hour.

Stalking – 1,377,960 a year; 3,775 a day; approximately 157
people are stalked every hour.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you,
but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could

Paris in for a World of Hurt

Posted by Rob on Monday, 14 May, 2007

It has been reported that Paris Hilton is taking
self-defense lessons in preparation for her 6 weeks in jail.
Supposedly Paris has asked her personal trainer to teach
her some techniques to keep her safe before she enters jail
on June 5th. “She’s so scared about going to jail and will
do everything she can to protect herself.”

After threatening messages appeared on her website,
seemingly from existing inmates of Century Regional
Detention Facility, Ms. Hilton has been justifiably
concerned for her safety. “Paris has been really shaken by
the threats. People are saying there’s some tough girls
inside who will target her.”

Sure, laws apply to the rich and famous too, but we are
talking Paris Hilton here. If anyone is not cut out for
spending time in jail it is her. Perhaps she should
consider watching the “Secrets of Cage Fighting” by Tom
Proctor. All puns aside, this could be the most important
90 minutes of Paris’ life.

https://worthprotectionsecurity.com/proctor.htm

If you want to learn how to fight very quickly… with an
astonishing “short set” of viciously simple secrets that
will allow you to step up to any fighter, of any size and
skill level, and instantly introduce him to a new world of
pain and fear… this is the DVD set for you.

This will change your life… and the way you walk the
earth, forever.

Here’s why. The closest you will ever get to a real street
fight or combat situation is in the illegal no-rules
“cage” and “pit” fights staged in underground arenas
around the world. The only real difference is… in the
street or battlefield, you can run away. In the cage (or
prison)… There’s No Place To Run!

Tom Proctor’s mission is to completely erase ALL the
advantages that big, muscular, intensely-trained creeps have
against normal guys. His single-minded goal is to make every
bully, rapist, convict and thrill-seeking punk think twice
before jumping a guy (or a woman) they “think” they can
easily take.

Paris! Please take advantage of an opportunity like this.
Self Defense is just that. Taking your own well being into
your own hands. The guards can not be there 24/7, and be
assured someone will attempt to get a piece of the Hilton
fortune once she is confined to a cell block.

Even if you are not scheduled to be the guest of honor in the
Big House, a knowledge of basic self defense techniques would
do nothing but benefit you.

“The Simple Life” will never be the same.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you,
but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could
be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection
to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal
well-being?

Stay safe and be prepared!

Rob

No Yum Yums for Dum Dum

Posted by Rob on Sunday, 13 May, 2007

A robbery attempt was foiled when a man got zapped with a
stun gun while trying to rob Yum Yum Donuts in San Ysidro.
Just before 11 PM, a man walks in to the donut shop and
jumped over the counter. He struck an employee and tried to
take the cash in the register. The female employee fought
back, and another woman pulled out a stun gun and let the
guy have it.

The guy was able to run out before the police showed up. No
money, no donuts, no luck.

Don’t think it can’t happen to you. Whether personally or
in your presence, some creep may decide to act a little
crazy. Sure the other woman could have backed up and minded
her own business. She could have let the creep hit the
employee and empty the register. If she didn’t act when
she did, would the creep have settled for the register?
Would he have turned to the other woman, punch her in the
face and demanded her purse? Would an extra two minutes
allowed the creep to pull out a gun or knife and cause some
serious damage? Would she have had the opportunity to
react later in the situation?

Don’t let it get to the next point if it doesn’t have to.
You don’t have to be a hero, just aware of what is going
on, and what you can handle. If you are packing a stun gun,
know how to use it and use it when necessary. If pepper
spray is more your style, so be it. Some pepper spray or
stun gun would equally have ruined his late night donut
binge.

Pepper Spray Training 101

Posted by Rob on Sunday, 13 May, 2007

Prerequisite: Purchase pepper spray, some for practice,
some to carry regularly.

https://worthprotectionsecurity.com/peppersprays.htm

Spray Pattern Considerations:

Fogger – Best for outdoor use and multiple target
capability. Chance of blow back.

Cone – Best all around pattern, more concentrated
patterns than Foggers. Minimal blow back.

Stream – Good for indoor/outdoor use & windy
conditions, pin-point accuracy required.

Foam/Gel – Perfect for indoors, pin-point accuracy,
little to no chance of blow back.

How to Practice Your Technique:

Always carry your pepper spray in the same location so you
will not have to think about where it is when you are in
danger.

Practice drawing your pepper spray quickly. Practice
flipping safety mechanism.

Know how your pepper spray works and practice spraying with
the wind to your back.

Practice aiming and hitting a specific target. Fogger and
cone pattern require less aim. Stream, foam or gels require
greater accuracy.

Practice with a canister designated as a practice can.
Carry a full canister (same model) that you test only. You
do not want to be caught with an canister that you emptied
while practicing.

When facing an assailant, draw your pepper spray but raise
your other hand first as a distraction as you yell
“Stop!”. Then raise your pepper spray to your eye level,
aim and discharge your spray into his face.

Back away from downed attacker, but do not turn your back.
Proceed to a safe location and call the police immediately.

Sprays And How To Use Them To Bring Criminals To Their

you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?
