Stand Back! He’s Got a Spork!

Posted by Rob on Friday, 29 February, 2008

A man in Anchorage, Alaska has been arrested as a suspect in an attempted armed robbery. Allegedly, the suspect tried to grab a man’s watch and the victim thought the assailant swung a pocketknife at him, which caught him in the side.

Upon inspection of the wound, instead of a pocketknife slash, four small scratches were found, consistent with being administered by what appeared to be a less-than-lethal plastic spork.

If you are unfamiliar with this fast-food eating utensil, a spork is one of those hybrid spoon and fork combos. Restaurants that are too cheap to distribute both regular plastic spoons and separate regular plastic forks use these foolish implements. I hate sporks, now I hate to be worried about being held up by one?

The man was apprehended a few blocks from the scene, intoxicated, and carrying an actual pocketknife, as well as a backpack containing a crumpled fast food bag and a small arsenal of sporks.

It was not clear if the additional sporks were intended to be used to consume food or commit further criminal acts, so they were promptly confiscated by authorities.

I am actually at a loss on what to suggest to protect yourself from being attacked by a drunk man wielding a spork. Normally I might suggest some pepper spray or a stun gun, but that seems like overkill.

Perhaps a personal alarm might work. That way you can draw attention to the situation and more people can be alerted and share in the laughter at this feeble attempt to appear intimidating and dangerous with a spork.

I can’t even in good conscience recommend one of our instructional fighting DVDs to combat spork warfare as any of these masters would probably find it difficult to keep a straight face if confronted with a spork. Can you imagine Chris Clugston, Paul Vunak or Bob Taylor demonstrating the proper technique for properly disarming a plastic spork??

Ok, all kidding aside, these videos are actually excellent teaching aids, concentrating on simple and effective self defense moves that can be easily and quickly learned. Not everyone has years to devote to a full blown martial arts training regiment, but anyone can squeeze in a couple hours a week to watching and practicing some of these moves.

You never know when someone may pull a weapon on you. More often than not the weapon is going to be far worse than a spork, and the attacker may be after more than just your watch. Be prepared to defend your life or the life of a loved one.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

Bah, It’s only a 16 foot Python. No Worries Mate.

Posted by Rob on Thursday, 28 February, 2008

A 16 foot scrub python devoured a family dog in front of the
children, ages 5 and 7, who were playing in their yard. The
110 pound snake quickly squeezed the life out of the much
smaller silky terrier-Chihuahua crossbreed before swallowing
it whole at their home near Kuranda in Queensland state in
Australia.

This story, as amazing as it is, actually gets worse. The
python actively stalked the family dog, as the family
noticed the snake hanging around for several days. They
even saw it hanging out in the dog’s bed, which apparently
was a tell-tale sign that the snake was out to get the dog,
says a local snake expert.

Ok fine, perhaps the family was unaware of the staking
rituals of a scrub python, but if you notice a 16 foot
python spending extra time around your house and you
have a small dog, and two small children, don’t you call
Animal Control ASAP? Crikey!

It’s not like they could have armed the pooch with pepper
spray
or a stun gun but come on now. Pick up your phone
before your dog’s hind legs and tail are all that are
sticking out of the snake’s mouth.

Let’s step back for a second and forget about the animals
for a minute. If there was a strange van parked across the
street from your house on and off for a few days and you
noticed a suspicious looking stranger hanging around, how
long do you wait to call the police to check out the
situation?

Hopefully before your child or a neighbor’s child ends up
missing. If their indifferent reaction to the frequent
snake sightings are any indication, am afraid that might
be the case.

Don’t wait until it is too late. Protect yourself and your
loved ones. Buy some pepper spray or a stun gun. If you
live in bear country, buy some bear spray. Be prepared
before something bad happens.

And if you see a 16 foot snake staking out your property,
or a suspicious stranger, or a rabid dog, PICK UP YOUR
PHONE. Call the Police, call animal control, call your
cousin Big Vito, just do something!

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Yours in Safety,

Nanny Cams, the Good, Bad and the Ugly

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 27 February, 2008

No doubt you have heard the latest report from North
Carolina where a nanny was fired after being caught on
Nanny Cam. In this case, the mother goes to work after
hiring a highly recommended nanny, but has a funny feeling
something might not be right. She buys and installs a Nanny
Cam to appease her suspicions and sees her twin babies were
being mistreated, after the first day she used the camera.

Many parents consider using hidden surveillance devices in
their homes to watch their child’s caregiver, but some balk
at the perceived cost of the investment. Others argue the
invasion of privacy argument… but really now, we are
talking about the safety and welfare of our own kids. Can
you put a price tag on that?

The Advantages of Using a Nanny Cam

There are a wide variety of hidden cameras available on the
market today. The best are wireless and can be hidden in
almost any type of household item from a stuffed animal to
a wall clock or a book on your bookshelf.

Prices range from around $200 for a basic system run off
your home PC to $3000 or more for a complete system that
monitors several rooms of your house. You can view live
video via the internet or cell phone at any time to see
what is going on at home. Peace of mind and confidence in
child care are the leading reasons why some families
decide to “spy” on their child’s nanny or babysitter.

The Disadvantages of Using a Nanny Cam

There are studies and polls show that many care providers
are not necessarily against video taping of child-provider
interaction. Hopefully most nannies are trustworthy and are
doing the right thing. Usually it’s just that they want to
know about it ahead of time. It seems to be a matter of
trust and feeling of deception. To this I say who cares.
It is my child, and I am paying you to do your job and not
mistreat my children. Integrity is doing the right thing
when you think no one is watching. In God we trust, all
others we monitor.

Other Uses For In-Home Surveillance

Spy cams can be used for many other reasons than just
keeping tabs on child care. The systems can be used while
your home is being cleaned, for occasional in-home sitter
services, and for security reasons. You can even keep an
eye on your pets, which many pet owners may argue are
their “kids” anyways. Nothing says guilty like having it
on tape.

Do providers support the use of video cameras?

While most of the media stories focus on potential abuse
and inattention being reasons parents should consider
using a nanny cam, some sitters have indicated a camera
can provide a positive connection with the families while
at work.

The issue seems to be when care providers are secretly
taped. As a parent, you can handle the situation by
telling a potential care provider upfront that a nanny
cam will be used. This way they can feel comfortable and
confident about their child’s care and either accept or
decline the position with a family who uses a nanny cam.
Would you really want an nanny the refused to be
videotaped anyways? I doubt it.

Is It Legal To Use A Hidden Camera?

It is indeed legal in all 50 states to use a hidden camera.
However, it is illegal to record speech without a person’s
consent in the following 15 states: California, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, and Washington. Most standard nanny cams do
not include audio recording, only video.

Are More Daycares Starting To Use Cameras?

many daycare centers are installing cameras and some
provide parents with the ability to spot check and watch
their child while at work. Some facilities provide parents
with a real-time access to watch happenings in their child’s
classroom via the internet. Parents report that while they
often don’t use it all the time, it’s nice to be able to
log in and check on their child whenever they desire. There
is no better feeling to be able to tune in for a few
minutes and reassure yourself that your kids are doing fine.

Where Can I Get A Nanny Cam?

Glad you asked! Worth Protection Security has many
different options that can be suited and customized for
your particular situation. Prices can vary greatly
depending on your need and overall usage and expectation.
Check out our site and feel free to ask any questions that
would help you choose the perfect home monitoring system.

Don’t let your children be neglected or become mistreated
by anyone – arm yourself and your family with a Nanny Cam
today!

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Nevada Tragedy Prompts Public Awareness

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 20 February, 2008

People in Reno, Nevada are buying up pepper spray and stun guns in droves lately. Apparently fearing for their safety after the killing of Brianna Denison by a serial rapist, many young women are looking for any means possible of fending off a possible attack.

One of the more popular models are the half-ounce canisters in leather cases that can be attached to a key chain. Other small, easily carried stun guns and personal alarms are also popular and effective means of disabling an assailant or calling attention and help to the scene.

Most importantly, the women who are purchasing these products must educate themselves and practice drawing their self defense items and practice deploying or aiming their product. Just having one of these items is not enough, if when faced with a dangerous situation, the person is unable to effectively use the item.

Usually reading the instructions provided, a simple internet search for information regarding your self defense product and familiarizing yourself with correctly handling the item should make you comfortable enough and improve your chances of fending off someone wishing to do harm to you or a loved one.

Sadly, it took a very unfortunate event in NV to make people aware of the need to carry some sort of defensive tool for their personal protection. I always say I wish everyone had some pepper spray or a stun gun with them at all times, and I also hope that they never have to actually use it to defend themselves.

The harsh reality of it, it there is always the chance that something bad could happen. Some people are prepared ahead of time, some people are not. Which are you?

If you are not carrying, you should.

I Would Kill for a Taco Right About Now…

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 19 February, 2008

Did you ever crave something so bad that you thought to yourself “Gee, I would kill for a taco right about now?” Most rational people would dismiss this as a passing thought. Some of us may even be motivated to go to Taco Bell and indulge in our craving.

Then some might even take it a step farther in the wrong direction. In this case we have a meeting of two taco cravers in Fontana, California. The first guy rationally decides to purchase some tacos at a street-corner taco stand this past Sunday night.

Now this guy was really craving tacos, so he bought about $20 worth. That’s alot of tacos. I’m not sure how much each they are at this street-side stand, but Taco Bell gets a about buck per, so we are potentially talking about at least 20 tacos in this sack.

The second guy, irrationally taking his craving near the extreme, pulls out a gun and points it at the first guy. “Give me your tacos!” he barks. He actually threatens to kill him as he demanded the bag of tacos. Fearing for his life, the first man hands over the tacos, gets punched in the face, and goes home hungry.

El Taco Bandito flees the scene, obviously thinking to himself “Mmmmmm, TACOS! I gots me some Tacos!”

The only thing missing from this story would have been the creative use of some condiments, namely some makeshift pepper spray in the form of hot sauce in the suspect’s eyes. In this case it was probably best to just surrender the tacos and have the situation end itself.

On the other hand, if El Taco Bandito decided to push the matter further and attempt to make good on the life threat, some more serious retaliation would be in order.

What would you do when a ravenously hungry thug stuck a gun in your face and began making threats? What if he was hopped up on drugs and talking your way out was out of the question?

Perhaps Bob Taylor could help. He has put together quite a training DVD on this particular subject – Advanced Gun Disarmament and Weapons Retention.

https://worthprotectionsecurity.com/taylor.htm

This video is perfect for both the gun owner who does not want his weapon used against him, and the non-gun owner that wants to disarm an assailant pointing a gun in his direction.

Much of the material you would see concerns lethal tactics that you may be forced to use to save your own life. This is brutal stuff, and not for the faint of heart. Bob has made it easy to learn, and simple to use… so SWAT cops wouldn’t have to spend hours training. These are life-saving skills for the real world, where it sometimes gets nasty. And this is your ONLY opportunity to see them yourself.

I hope that some pepper spray and a stun gun would get you clear of most situations, but for those wishing to take it to the next level, this would be a good place to start. Besides, being able to only handle “most” situations will only get you so far.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Candy Apple Red HOT Cell Phone Stun Gun

Posted by Rob on Friday, 15 February, 2008

Rachel hated the subway. She grew up in a small town in Washington State, so she enjoyed being outside at every chance she could get.

As an attorney in the New York City, she often had to get to work at an hour that most folks were still dreaming in their beds. So she used the twelve-block walk from her apartment to her office as a chance to spend some quiet time enjoying her surroundings.

Still, she often felt a little nervous about walking those streets alone. So she picked up a brand new 800,000 volt Red Cell Phone Stun Gun, the newest cell phone stun gun at Worth Protection Security.

It looks just like a regular phone, complete with a holster. And nobody’s going to question a well-dressed businessperson walking down the street holding a stylish candy apple red cell phone.

Rachel’s intuition paid off one Thursday morning, when a junkie burst out from behind a dumpster and started screaming at her to hand over her purse. As she put her hands in the air, she used her thumb to disable the safety lock on the Red Cell Phone Stun Gun.

Rachel grabbed her purse with her other hand, tossing it past the criminal. As he bent over to pick it up, she jabbed the Red Cell Phone Stun Gun in the small of his back, shooting 800,000 volts of electricity through his body. She never even had to take it out of its carrying case.

With her attacker curled up on the ground, Rachel pulled out her real cell phone to call the police. Her colleagues always wondered why she carried two cell phones. They usually assumed that a powerful woman needed them both. Rachel grinned as she realized they didn’t know just how much power she really wielded.

Former NFL QB Sacked by Taser

Posted by Rob on Thursday, 14 February, 2008

Josh Booty, former NFL quarterback was subdued by sheriff’s deputies with a Taser gun on the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, California. He ended up with a black eye Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Booty, the older brother of Southern California quarterback John David Booty, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after being pulled over says Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Hal Brotheim.

During the booking process, the 32-year-old Booty became belligerent and deputies used the TASER Device, Brotheim said.

“After being Tased, he was fully compliant,” Brotheim said.

That has to be the best quote ever!

Of course he was compliant afterward, you’d be surprised how their tune changes. Not so much of a tough guy running his mouth off to the cops anymore.

Works equally well against some belligerent thug harassing or threatening you or a loved one.

What did you give for Valentine’s Day this year?

Posted by Rob on Thursday, 14 February, 2008

Flowers, candy, jewelry or an expensive dinner may keep you out of the doghouse with your significant other but what happens if some thug tries to ruin your Valentine’s night?

Sure a stun gun or pepper spray might not get the same initial reaction, so don’t totally ditch the flowers and candy… But what else could be a more appropriate gift on Valentine’s Day than an expression of both love and concern for the safety of your loved ones?

Luckily buying some self defense tools to protect yourself, family or friends does not require a special occasion. Anytime is the perfect time to surprise someone with the gift of personal protection.

And they will thank you for it one way or another.

Don’t worry if you didn’t order in time for this February 14th, order some personal protection now and give the gift for no particular occasion. If you need any help deciding on what to get, shoot me an e-mail.

Our TASER C2s do come in pink and red if that helps.

Different World Today

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 13 February, 2008

The world is a different place these days. I’m not positive when it happened, but if you look at the following passage you will remember doing it, and wonder how it all became so unheard of in today’s world. Is it the media to blame? Society? Video Games? Satanic influences? You decide.

Here is your stroll down memory lane (if you are old enough to have experienced it first hand):

“—————————
This is dedicated to those Born between the years 1930-1979!

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930′s 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked, drank and/or took a few drugs while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna fish from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with brightly colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking (No way today).

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up with the dog on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a fancy plastic bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank koolade made with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because…

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. (Not the case anymore) No one was able to reach us all day. And we were OK. (Definitely not OK in today’s world)

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-box 360s, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVDs, no surround-sound, CDs or Ipods, no cell phones!, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms…

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them, not on Facebook or Twitter!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. We even kept score during the game! Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of us… CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives… for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it?!”

Quote by Jay Leno:

“With hurricanes, tornadoes, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?”

Your Life is Worth More than the Cost of a Taser

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 12 February, 2008

It simply amazes me how much money people will spend on certain things, and not give a thought about how to protect themselves.

What is your life worth in dollars? What about the life of your spouse or other loved one? Most people would say can’t put a price on it.

How about some values on things we can assign a dollar value to?

- $750,000 on a house – but no money for any alarms, much less a surveillance system.

- $60,000 on a car – but no protection for the driver.

- $45,000 a year on tuition, room and board – but no protection for the student.

It just doesn’t make sense.

How much should you spend? Well, that depends on what you are protecting.

If you have a child in college, you can protect them very, very well for a little over a hundred dollars. Extremely well for two hundred. Less than 1/2 of 1% of $45K in tuition, room and board. And you only pay once, not every year, so that takes it way down.

Protection in your $60K car? Around a hundred bucks.

Protection for your $750K house? Around five hundred for the basics to a couple thousand for all the bells and whistles, but again, you don’t have to do it but once. Less than 1% to start, and it goes down from there.

Not only that, but it buys peace of mind, which you also can’t put a price on. The reality of the situation is that that personal protection and surveillance costs very little to start, and it delivers in the clutch.

Think about it. Where can you get this kind of bang for your buck? Is that $300 TASER C2 still really way too expensive?

If you’re prepared, you’ll never be surprised.

Your Life is Worth More than the Cost of a TASER Device.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?
