No Phone, No Problem for the CyberEye

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 30 April, 2008

When Jimmy discovered plans for a row of executive townhouses on
his street, he wondered if his new neighbors would attract
burglars to the neighborhood.

So Jimmy installed a security system that calls the police
department during break-ins. Staring at the sensors and the
controls, he wondered if it was enough.

That’s when he bought his CyberEye.

He mounted the CyberEye facing his front door and his bay window
and set it to capture an image every fifteen seconds.

Months later, Jimmy took his family to the movies. They drove
right past the construction site, where a backhoe had severed a
fiber optic cable. Jimmy didn’t know it then, but his entire
neighborhood had lost their phone service!

Meanwhile, a plain white van parked in front of Jimmy’s house.
Three men wearing hooded sweatshirts sauntered up the lawn. One
produced a crow bar from his sleeve and smashed right through
that beautiful bay window.

Before Jimmy’s neighbors heard the alarm bells, those felons had
vanished. With no landlines, the alarm system could not contact
ANYONE.

Giggles turned to gasps inside Jimmy’s station wagon when they
pulled up to their home behind two police cars. Never losing his
cool, Jimmy led the detectives to his television, it had been too
heavy for the thieves to snatch and activated the remote control
for his CyberEye.

Even with no lights on, the infrared lens captured everything:
the broken window, the first thief climbing in and opening the
front door for his companions… everything.

It even captured all three of them, taking off their hoods,
staring DIRECTLY into that lens.

Not only did the cops know exactly who they were dealing with,
but the CyberEye put a time stamp on each frame. Now the
investigators knew exactly WHEN the crooks made off with Jimmy’s
things.

That date stamp came in handy the next day, when Jimmy’s
insurance adjuster looked at the tape Jimmy made by connecting
the CyberEye to a VCR. The agent always hated tracking down
receipts and evidence for homeowners’ insurance cases. This time,
he could see who was aking what items and when.

Jimmy got even more good news that week. One of the ringleader’s
so-called friends saw his picture on the evening news. That
‘friend’ wanted the small reward from the neighborhood watch
association, and he told police where to find the burglars.

Even the fanciest lawyer couldn’t talk his way around that
powerful image of the crooks, with their hands on Jimmy’s things,
stamped with a time and a date for everyone to see.

Jimmy’s insurance company fixed the window and replaced all of
the stolen goods. And Jimmy’s neighbors ask him constantly about
his CyberEye. He tells them every time how it was the best
purchase he ever made.

What’s in Your Pocket?

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 29 April, 2008

To quote those rather annoying credit card commercials
“What’s In Your Wallet?”

But really, what IS in your wallet? You probably have
Credit cards, bank cards, your id, pictures, Cash? I’m
pretty sure most of these items are pretty standard
fixtures in most people’s wallet or purse. And be sure
these are the same pretty coveted items that a common
street thug is after.

This same street thug is usually a grown up version of
the typical bully on the grade school playground. He is
preying on the seemingly weak with his fear and
intimidation tactics, and will get his way, over and over
again if you let him.

Especially in these times of our “economic slowdown”
(Isn’t that what the politicians are calling it?), many
economically challenged people may more readily resort to
crime and robbery in an attempt to get ahead at the
expense of unsuspecting you.

Don’t be a victim if you don’t have to. Losing your wallet
is quite the ordeal. Canceling and replacing all of your
cards, replacing ids, pictures and all of the other items
you have stashed and horded in your wallet or purse. Not
to mention how much of your hard earned cash has just
lined the pockets of some low life street rat.

So really, the better question is “What’s in Your Pocket?
(or on your keychain?)”

You would be surprised how much a little pepper spray
or a stun gun
would change the tune of this fear and
intimidation junkie. It is much harder to forcibly
demand your personal possessions if the creep’s eyes
are burning, tearing uncontrollably and having a fit of
coughing and choking. Some Mace to the face would give
you ample time to vacate the premises while this thug
has some quality time rolling around the pavement.

You would probably even have an extra second to execute
a quick boot to the gut on your way out if you so choose.

Once you are a safe distance away, alert the police to
have them clean up the mess and give the thug some time
to cool off.

Don’t be afraid to tool up with some self defense
products
and protect what is rightfully yours. Belongings
can be replaced but encounters with street thugs can quite
easily escalate into personal safety situations. The
quicker and more effiently the situation is dealt with,
the better.

When threatened, turn self defense into self offense. Take
the matter into your own hands and end it on your terms.
Control the situation, End the confrontation. The longer
the thug stays in control, the worse the situation can
become.

Remember, this creep is not expecting you to offer any
resistance. Throw him off his game.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you,
but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could
be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Yours in safety,

Rob

Next time, Stick to what is on the Menu.

Christy waited tables at a hip little bistro a few blocks from
her apartment. Though she loved her neighborhood, she was
always prepared for the unexpected.

One night, one of the diners got a little out of hand. She could
put up with rude customers, and she could even tolerate patrons
who had a little too much to drink. She and her boss agreed that
anyone who tried to lay hands on her or on any of the wait staff
would end up enjoying the rest of their meal “to go.”

So her boss ejected a customer who looked like a rumpled college
professor after he tried to pinch Christy’s bottom. The guy
created a huge stink, but the customers applauded when he fell
down the steps and landed on the sidewalk with a thud.

Later that night, after Christy cashed out and counted her tip
money, she headed back down the street to her place. She thought
she heard footsteps behind her, but saw nobody when she swung
around.

Another block away from the restaurant, she thought she heard a
trash can rattle. Still, she couldn’t see anyone in the shadows.

Only a few steps away from her building’s front door, Christy
heard someone sneeze. She whipped around to see the drunken
customer from earlier that night.

He lunged at her, shouting, “I’ll show you!”

Instead of bolting for the door – she wouldn’t have made it in
time, anyway – she pulled out her keys. Instead of a usual
keychain, Christy carries a Mace Pepper Baton. It’s small enough
to fit in a purse, and durable enough to inflict pain on an
attacker.

As the drunken patron grabbed for her hair, Christy ducked down
and slammed the Pepper Baton across his kneecap. Wincing in pain,
he buckled over and made another swipe at her. She retaliated by
holding onto the baton and swinging her keys against his face.

Stumbling, the attacker made one last grab. Christy pointed the
baton at him, unleashing its secret weapon – a blast of
debilitating pepper spray.

Christy’s attacker crouched on the sidewalk while she dialed
9-1-1 on her cell phone.

“Next time,” Christy said, “stick to what’s on the menu.”

The Mace Pepper Baton comes in a variety of colors to match
your mood or your style. Choose your own today at

If you order within the next five days, I will give you a
FREE Mace Baton Refill…a $7.95 value. Just mention FREE Mace

You Got Beat Up by a Blind Guy!

Posted by Rob on Friday, 25 April, 2008

In the spirit of the “You Got Beat Up by a Girl!” post
from a few weeks back, now we have a “You Got Beat Up
by a Blind Guy!” story. And no disrespect to the legally
blind man, he kicks some ass.

So as the story goes, this perp breaks into Allan
Kieta’s house in Indianapolis. The dog starts barking
and Allan goes to investigate and comes across the
intruder. The blind home owner pins the guy in the
laundry room and proceeds to pummel him into submission.

After the beating, Allan grabs the intruder by the belt
and drags him to the kitchen where he grabs a knife and
holds him while he calls 911. “Being visually impaired,
I couldn’t get the buttons because I was using my left
hand,” Kieta says “It took me about 20 tries.”

The police arrived a few minutes later and arrested the
man at least for residential entry.

Probably the best quote was “When my wife was cleaning
the blood off, she said, ‘I think it’s all his,’” Kieta
said. Kieta did suffer swollen hands and a sore back, but
no other serious injuries.

Here is one blind man who isn’t going to take any crap
from anyone.

Make sure you are ready to handle the unexpected. Tool
up with the latest self defense gear, brush up on some
self defense moves with an instructional DVD or protect
your home with an alarm or surveillance system.

Be ready for anything and don’t be afraid to lay a smack
down if the situation presents itself.

Voice Alert Home/Driveway Alert Saves the Day

Posted by Rob on Thursday, 24 April, 2008

When Dr. Ron Caro’s wife wanted to leave their apartment after
their new mountain bikes were stolen from their balcony facing
the alley, Dr. Caro installed a security system that has caught
and prosecuted more than 14 perpetrators in the past two years.

Dr. Caro lives in an upscale neighborhood in Whittier, California,
in an apartment directly above the complex’s carports adjacent to
the alley. Two year’s ago, after his bikes were stolen, Dr. Caro
purchased four bullet cameras, a time-lapse video recorder, and a
quad
to monitor the activity in and around the carports, alley,
and patio. The week after installing the system, a neighbor had
a break-in, so Dr. Caro reviewed the tape to see what happened.
He found the incident and gave the tape to the police.

“The police took a report and told me that unless I knew where
the suspect lived or who he was there was really no way to catch
the guy,” Dr. Caro explained.

So Dr. Caro added Voice Alert, a wireless notification device, to
his system. The Voice Alert system combines wireless infrared
sensors with a speaker/receiver that allows the user to record up
to six individual messages. When a sensor is triggered by
activity, a signal is sent to the receiver/speaker and it plays
the corresponding message to alert the home or business owner
that an incident has occurred.

Dr. Caro installed three Voice Alert sensors in the carport and
positioned them so that the infrared beams intersected to detect
anything that entered the carport. Less than a week after he
installed Voice Alert, the receiver speaker sounded at 4 a.m.
playing the message “Someone’s in the carport!” and waking
Dr. Caro.

He turned on his monitor and saw the same guy who robbed his
neighbor a week earlier in his carport. The time-lapse recorder
was recording and Caro, a former Marine Corps Officer, held the
suspect until police arrived. Dr. Caro gave the time-lapse
recording to the police, providing enough evidence to prosecute
the suspect. That same scenario, with different suspects, has
occurred numerous times over the past two years. Each with the
same outcome, the suspect gets caught and prosecuted.

“One police officer even mentioned that more people should have a
system like mine,” said Dr. Caro. “As far as I’m concerned,
surveillance without sensors is not effective. You need to catch
them in the act.”

Dr. Caro looked at other notification systems and found Voice
Alert
to have the best wireless range and the best price. “It’s a
great piece of equipment,” said Dr. Caro.

the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth
more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your

Grizzly Bear Attacks and Kills Trainer

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 23 April, 2008

A 7 1/2 foot tall, 700 lb. grizzly bear killed one of
his trainers with a bite to the neck yesterday. “Rocky”,
the 5 year old bear was recently seen in the movie
“Semi-Pro” where he wrestled Will Ferrell’s character.

At the time of the attack, 3 experienced animal handlers
were working with Rocky in a training center in
California. Pepper Spray was used to subdue and contain
the grizzly immediately after the attack, and no other
injuries were reported.

This bear was known as one of the best bears in the
business and seemed to obediently follow cues and
instructions. “You can train them and use as many safety
precautions as you can, but you’re still taking a chance
if you’re putting yourself in contact with them, It’s
still a wild animal,” says a zoo worker.

If you ever come across a bear in the wild, be assured
he probably isn’t trained to play nicely with humans.

The Sierra Club wants the Forest Service to require
everyone who enters a national forest in grizzly bear
country to carry bear spray Spokeswoman Heidi Godwin
said in a news release…

“The proper use of bear pepper spray will reduce human
injuries caused by bears, reduce the number of grizzly
bears killed in self defense, and help promote the
recovery and survival of the grizzly bear.”

We don’t necessarily approve of making new laws, but it
does show how effective bear spray is against bears.
Also, make sure that the spray you are using is registered
with the EPA for use against bears. There is a special
formula for this and ordinary pepper spray is not
recommended.

Carry on your belt so you’ll always be ready or set it
out at the camp so everyone has easy access to it. Some
states now have hunting laws requiring possession of a
defensive spray where bears are common. Check with your
local authorities.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Nothing Beats Mace to the Face

Posted by Rob on Monday, 14 April, 2008

A clerk in a cigarette store in Des Moines, Iowa
thwarted a robbery attempt in an unconventional, yet
strangely effective manner. Forcing one employee to
the ground, a masked man flashed a knife and
demanded money from another clerk.

Instead of emptying the cash register, the wiley clerk
started to empty a stack of chewing tobacco in the
robbers general direction. It took two throws before
one of the cans smacked the would-be robber in the
face. At this point a customer seeing an opening
tackled the man.

Unfortunately, the robber broke free and fled the scene.
If the clerks or customer was armed with a canister of
pepper spray, it would have been far less likely the
thief would have been able to run out the door.

The can of chewing tobacco to the face makes a funny
story but nothing beats a dose of Mace to the face.
When someone is sprayed with OC pepper spray, the
person’s eyes slam shut. Even if someone does manage to
get their eyes open, they won’t be able to see because
OC dilates the capillaries and causes temporary blindness.

Additionally, instant inflammation of the breathing
tissues restricts all but life support breathing. They
double over and begin to cough uncontrollably.

More than likely the creep would still be flailing on
the ground when the cops arrive. Perhaps he would make
it to the parking lot, but not much farther.

One of the clerks reported that the store was robbed
once before too. I hope that this second attempt will
persuade the management to invest in some form of
security, whether it be a surveillance camera, some
pepper spray or a Taser for the employees.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Yours in safety,

Machete Becoming Bay State’s Weapon of Choice?

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 9 April, 2008

The only Friday the 13th on the calendar in 2008 is in June, but already there has been a rash of Jason Voorhees like attacks. And it is only April. So far, this is the reported Machete attacks already occurring this year in the state of Machetusetts, I mean Massachusetts:

Jan. 7: (Roxbury, MA) Two men are arrested after they allegedly chase two people down a street while wielding a machete.

Jan. 18: (Chicopee, MA) A man is struck on his head, face and arm by a machete in the parking lot of Sunco Trading Corp during a robbery.

Feb. 4: (Springfield, MA) A man is slashed in the neck and throat and a woman is hit in the arm and leg with a machete in the parking lot of a Gulf gas station.

March 4: (Lynn, MA) Outside Lynn English High School, a 16-year-old Lynn boy suffers a facial laceration and nearly loses his right thumb from a machete attack.

March 8: (Boston, MA) An East Boston man is found bleeding from both feet from a machete attack in a staircase on Meridian Street.

March 13: (Boston, MA) An East Boston teen, victim of a daytime assault at City Hall Plaza is hacked in the left arm, back and shoulder by a machete.

March 15: (Boston, MA) A Revere man is struck in the mouth and back by a machete in a daytime assault on Dorchester Avenue. A South Boston woman was also hit in the head with the machete as she attempted to intervene.

March 26: (Lynn, MA) A Lynn teen is sliced on his left arm with a machete at a Strawberry Avenue playground while playing soccer with two brothers.

To date, these attacks pale in comparison to the death, destruction and gore of the machete-wielding mass murderer in the movies, but this frequency of machete attacks would even make Jason proud.

The machetes are being described as “inexpensive weapons (that) are too easily obtained”. “It’s obviously a very dangerous implement. It can cause severe damage when wielded against another human being,” says Mass. DA Daniel F. Conley.

For somewhere between $5 and $30 bucks, just about anyone can purchase a machete from online to the local Wal-mart. Typically ranging from 18-24 inches, this steel blade that can “cut, chop, slash, hack, split, scrape, scoop, hammer, crack or smash just about anything you can put in front of it.”

Machete sales are largely unregulated due to the fact it is designed and classified as a basic farming tool, mainly used in third world countries. Just like most of the Asian Martial Arts weapons that were originally peasant farming tools several hundred or thousand years ago, before they became popularized in Karate movies and American dojos.

But don’t worry. Massachusetts law prevents the sale of self defense weapons to all of its law abiding citizens. No tasers, no stun guns and extremely limited pepper spray approval if you jump through enough hoops and red tape!

We do have a few self defense options left for you Massachusetts, New York or other restricted state residents. Our telescopic steel batons are rather nice. Not too bad of an option. I wouldn’t mind having at least a 26″ inch steel baton to combat some psycho with a 18″ blade. Not necessarily ideal, but you have the reach advantage. And you can practice some moves and train yourself pretty good to defend yourself with the
telescopic steel baton. Most likely the machete is just being flailed around by an inexperienced wielder…

Spring is in the Air, Bears are in the Woods.

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 8 April, 2008

Even up here in frigid New England, Spring has finally sprung. I know the first day of spring was a few weeks ago, but now that most of the snow has melted around the house, I am much happier and actually feel like Spring is here.

Of course most of my neighbors have less shade and lost their snow cover some time ago. I even felt the need to rake some of the more stubborn residual snow banks this past weekend to speed up the melting progress. Now as long as there are no freak April snow storms we are all set…

So with the nice weather, a few safety and security concerns are becoming important again. More people are out and about, more frequently early in the morning, going for walks or jogs. Some people are enjoying the warmer evenings and longer hours of daylight. Some people are (or will soon be) venturing into the woods for hiking and camping again.

Creeps and thugs don’t really have an off season per say, but the more people out at prime time (from dawn to dusk) mean more readily available targets for them to attempt to take advatage of.

Bears on the other hand take a winter break and hibernate. Winter break is over and the bears are awake. Awake and hungry. This is about time to resurrect last year’s bear posting found at:

Even Yogi Bear needs to be treated with caution. There is no telling what he would do it tempted and taunted with a Pic-a-Nic Baskeet! Whatta you say Boo Boo?

Be Safe, Be Prepared. Get your hands on some self defense tools and have them readily available before you need to unleash a self defense whooping on some lowly street thug or other creature with ill intent.

When Hedgehogs Attack!

Posted by Rob on Monday, 7 April, 2008

Hedgehogs in New Zealand are getting a bum rap. Ok, well it wasn’t actually the hedgehog’s fault. Some guy grabbed one and chucked it at a teenager, hitting him in the leg.

“It hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks,” police say. The teen did not require further medical treatment. The hedgehog did not fair as well. It was not known if the hedgehog was alive while airborne, but when collected for evidence it was pronounced dead at the scene.

Said hedgehog was determined to be classified as a “weapon” so the attacker has been charged with assault with a weapon and may face up to a maximum of five years in prison. I am pretty sure the “Street Cred” in jail for assault with a hedgehog is rather low.

“People often get charged with assault for throwing things at other people,” said police. Although it was also said that it is uncommon that a hedgehog is used.

Uncommon? Really? You would have thought it would be a regular weapon of choice. It is rather, um, prickly…
