Store Clerk Robbed Twice in One Evening

The Shell Gas Stations in Grand Rapids, Michigan are pretty happening places these days. The following is a real story, as unbelievable as this may sound.

About 9:50 PM this past Sunday evening, the store clerk at the Monroe Ave station gets a “customer”. The customer, wearing a green jacket and black scarf pulls out a black hand gun and demands cash.

The robber gets the cash and flees the scene. The clerk calls the police, who show up and take a report. The cops leave and the clerk, still shaken from the robbery tries to relax and finish his shift. About two hours later, about 12:04 AM rolls around and another “customer” shows up. This one wearing a black mask, black clothing and another black hand gun.

“Oh, God, it can’t be happening again,” thinks the clerk. Again demanding money, the clerk complies and the next thief flees the scene. Same clerk calls the police again, who again show up and take another report.

I’m telling you, 1:45 AM rolls around and I’d be locking the door and turning off the lights for about 30 minutes.

Coincidentally, not too far away, the Shell Station on Leonard Street was robbed smack dab in the middle of the Monroe Ave incidents. About 10:50 PM, a man wearing a black nylon mask, black coat and black pants put a handgun to the clerk’s head, took some cash and left in a red Chevrolet Cavalier-type vehicle.

None of the clerks resisted the robbers and no one was injured.

Even after his store was robbed twice in two hours, Tommy Gutierrez says he won’t quit. “I’ve got to pay the bills, feed my kids, take care of myself and my wife,” says the clerk. “That’s what keeps me going.”

“You think in your head you want to do this and that,” says Gutierrez. “But when the time comes you can do nothing. Just give them what they want and let them go on their way.”

Hopefully the Shell Stations take some measures to protect their employees in the future. Michigan however has some strict laws limiting self-defense product options. Luckily these armed robbers were only after money.

Stun Guns and Tasers for personal protection are banned in Michigan. OC Pepper spray can be no stronger then a 2% concentrate in Michigan. CS is the only Tear Gas accepted and can be no larger then 35 grams per can. Many Pepper Spray products combine OC and CS into the same package, but no combination sprays are allowed in Michigan.

So far, no legislation to my knowledge is under review in Michigan to restrict the carry or concealment of rolled up magazines or those squeezable lemon-shaped lemon juice containers. These items are still available at all grocery stores to law-abiding citizens to use for self defense.

Armed robbery is still illegal, however; Non-law-abiding citizens or criminals typically choose to disregard these laws. Criminals are also free to carry, Stun Guns, Tasers, Hand Guns, full strength pepper spray or any other weapons they want, anywhere they want, since they feel laws do not apply to them anyways.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?
