Caught on Tape and our new DVR Hidden Cameras

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 10 February, 2009

Video surveillance cameras inside a bar in Buffalo, New York resulted in an arrest and helped solve a theft last week. A man was charged with grand larceny and petity larceny, being accused of stealing a woman’s purse from Kelly’s Korner bar a few weeks back.

The female victim contacted the police after the bar owner allowed her to view the surveillance footage that showed a man removing her black leather purse from a bar stool.

Nothing says GUILTY like video evidence.

Speaking of surveillance cameras, we have finalized our latest line of all-in-one DVR hidden cameras. A few weeks back I posted about them, but we recently refined the design, models, and pricing.

Hidden cameras have never been so easy to use, until now. With other hidden cameras you need to hook them up to a VCR, DVD recorder or other means to record what the camera sees. With these new DVR hidden cameras, there is a built in DVR that records to a handy 8GB SD card.

You literally put the DVR hidden camera where you want it, plug it in, point in the direction you want to film and press record on the included remote control. Doesn’t get any easier.

You can either hook the DVR hidden camera up to a TV or computer monitor with the included RCA cable or remove the SD card and insert into the SD card reader on your computer or an external SD card reader you can order with your hidden camera.

All-in-One DVR Hidden Camera Models available:
Alarm Clock Hidden Camera – HC-ALARC-DVR
Boom Box Hidden Camera – HC-BMBOX-DVR
Exit Sign Hidden Camera – HC-EXITS-DVR
Air Freshener Hidden Camera – HC-ARFSH-DVR
Air Purifier Hidden Camera – HC-ARPUR-DVR
Desk Lamp Hidden Camera – HC-DSKLP-DVR
Power Outlet Hidden Camera – HC-OUTLT-DVR
Tower Fan Hidden Camera – HC-WNDTN-DVR
Wall Clock Hidden Camera – HC-WALLC1-DVR
Wall Clock Neon Hidden Camera – HC-WALLC3-DVR
Covert Spy Pen Camera – HC-PEN

You don’t have to be a tech wizard. Don’t think for a second that you have to be an engineer, rocket scientist or have an advanced computer degree to make all this work for you. It really is that easy.

Whatever your reason for wanting the ability to keep an eye on your home or office, our surveillance equipment is simple to use and easy to install, all for around $450.

Surveillance that makes sense. Have your cameras watch when you cannot.

Hidden Camera Reveals Hidden Closet Tenant

Posted by Rob on Friday, 30 May, 2008

A man in Japan started to notice food missing from his kitchen and decided to set up a hidden camera to see what was going on. Soon after, his newly installed hidden camera system sent some interesting pictures to his mobile cell phone of a woman intruding in his home. The man promptly called the local police who rushed over to investigate the scene.

Allegedly, a woman who was quoted saying “I didn’t have anywhere to live,” had secretly taken up residence in an unused closet in the man’s house. She set up a mattress in there and stashed some water bottles for drinking. When the man left his house, the woman would slip out of the closet to use the bathroom and raid the kitchen for some food. When the man was home, she remained quietly inside.

The police suspect she has been “living” in the closet for several months, before the owner noticed the food was running out faster than he was eating it himself. The authorities had arrested the woman for trespassing, but would not comment further on the case.

There is no telling how long the 58-year-old unemployed woman would have been able to pull off this charade if the man in Fukuoka was less observant of his grocery bill. Perhaps if the woman cleaned the house and made dinner before ducking out of sight, the man would have been less intent on figuring out what was going on?

Nanny Cams, the Good, Bad and the Ugly

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 27 February, 2008

No doubt you have heard the latest report from North
Carolina where a nanny was fired after being caught on
Nanny Cam. In this case, the mother goes to work after
hiring a highly recommended nanny, but has a funny feeling
something might not be right. She buys and installs a Nanny
Cam to appease her suspicions and sees her twin babies were
being mistreated, after the first day she used the camera.

Many parents consider using hidden surveillance devices in
their homes to watch their child’s caregiver, but some balk
at the perceived cost of the investment. Others argue the
invasion of privacy argument… but really now, we are
talking about the safety and welfare of our own kids. Can
you put a price tag on that?

The Advantages of Using a Nanny Cam

There are a wide variety of hidden cameras available on the
market today. The best are wireless and can be hidden in
almost any type of household item from a stuffed animal to
a wall clock or a book on your bookshelf.

Prices range from around $200 for a basic system run off
your home PC to $3000 or more for a complete system that
monitors several rooms of your house. You can view live
video via the internet or cell phone at any time to see
what is going on at home. Peace of mind and confidence in
child care are the leading reasons why some families
decide to “spy” on their child’s nanny or babysitter.

The Disadvantages of Using a Nanny Cam

There are studies and polls show that many care providers
are not necessarily against video taping of child-provider
interaction. Hopefully most nannies are trustworthy and are
doing the right thing. Usually it’s just that they want to
know about it ahead of time. It seems to be a matter of
trust and feeling of deception. To this I say who cares.
It is my child, and I am paying you to do your job and not
mistreat my children. Integrity is doing the right thing
when you think no one is watching. In God we trust, all
others we monitor.

Other Uses For In-Home Surveillance

Spy cams can be used for many other reasons than just
keeping tabs on child care. The systems can be used while
your home is being cleaned, for occasional in-home sitter
services, and for security reasons. You can even keep an
eye on your pets, which many pet owners may argue are
their “kids” anyways. Nothing says guilty like having it
on tape.

Do providers support the use of video cameras?

While most of the media stories focus on potential abuse
and inattention being reasons parents should consider
using a nanny cam, some sitters have indicated a camera
can provide a positive connection with the families while
at work.

The issue seems to be when care providers are secretly
taped. As a parent, you can handle the situation by
telling a potential care provider upfront that a nanny
cam will be used. This way they can feel comfortable and
confident about their child’s care and either accept or
decline the position with a family who uses a nanny cam.
Would you really want an nanny the refused to be
videotaped anyways? I doubt it.

Is It Legal To Use A Hidden Camera?

It is indeed legal in all 50 states to use a hidden camera.
However, it is illegal to record speech without a person’s
consent in the following 15 states: California, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, and Washington. Most standard nanny cams do
not include audio recording, only video.

Are More Daycares Starting To Use Cameras?

many daycare centers are installing cameras and some
provide parents with the ability to spot check and watch
their child while at work. Some facilities provide parents
with a real-time access to watch happenings in their child’s
classroom via the internet. Parents report that while they
often don’t use it all the time, it’s nice to be able to
log in and check on their child whenever they desire. There
is no better feeling to be able to tune in for a few
minutes and reassure yourself that your kids are doing fine.
