When is Enough simply Enough, Nadya Suleman?

Thursday, February 25, 2010 Posted by Rob

Nadya Suleman just appeared on The View and basically said she can’t rule out having another child in the future.

This is the woman known as “Octomom,” who had octuplets by in vitro fertilization last January, already had 6 older kids, and has since been widely criticized for having such a huge family as a single mother with 14 kids on public assistance.

“If someday far, far, far, far in the future, when they’re older, if I meet somebody… I’m not going to say 100 percent no,” said Suleman when asked if she wanted any more kids. “I’m not going to say someday far in the future I will get married and want a baby with that person.”

nadya-suleman-octomomHow do you keep track of that many kids? I have four kids. I can not even fathom ten more children running around, competing for attention and trying to keep them safe and secure 24/7.

I’m sure we have all had that split second gut-wrenching feeling of turning around in a busy store and finding that our child who was just right there, is nowhere in sight. I can’t imagine Nadya would even notice a missing child or two right away.

We have a “electronic child leash” that lets you know immediately if your child wanders too far away from you. The Child Guard is a kid friendly animal-shaped transmitter sends a signal to the adult’s receiver. Adjustable to a distance of 6 to 30 feet, the device will start to beep when your child starts to stray.

If you have more than once child, or if another parent is using a similar child monitoring device in the same area, the frequencies adjust themselves automatically, much like a car door or garage door opener. That way, only your device goes off.

You could even attach this device to other objects, besides children. Clip one to your purse or wallet, crank down the setting to 6 feet and know if someone just snuck off with your belongings before they get a mile away…

Features of the Child Guard monitor:

* Simple and easy to use in a compact wireless design. Clip and go.
* Child friendly design, transmitter strategically hidden in a toy panda clip.
* Rotating dial adjusts the range from anywhere between 6 and 30 feet.
* Transmitter can be attached by buckle, to clothes, or worn as a necklace.
* Suitable for either indoor and outdoor use.
* Lithium batteries are included.
* Easy to understand instructions.

This device is a technological advance to those kid leash straps, that kids (and dogs) used to get harnessed into. This is a perfect solution to help wrangle a child or two, it just isn’t possible to keep both eyes on your child every second.

As neat as this device is, I’m not sure it would do a lick of good for Nadya Suleman’s small village. The non-stop beeping of children running in 14 different directions, while humorous to watch, would probably would drive her insane in a matter of seconds… that is more insane than she already is.

Be Safe, Be Prepared, Know when enough is enough.

William Wilberforce said it best…

Monday, February 22, 2010 Posted by Rob

William Wilberforce was a British politician and a philanthropist. He was also a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. Yes, I had to Google him, but I found this quote on a dog training blog. The quote is quite versatile, and has been referenced many times for many different topics. Originally he meant it during an anti-slave trade speech.

“Having heard all of this, you may choose to look the other way … but you can never say again that you did not know.”
- William Wilberforce (24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833)

I was just reading a story about a home invasion in Tallahassee, Florida where a suspect was shot. The comments that followed the story were rather odd. Many people agreed that it was good that there was a gun in the home, while some others had a quite different reaction.

I have used the quote “When seconds counts, police are minutes away,” numerous times. Personally I see this as an accurate statement, in that when a crime of any form is actively occurring, you can either defend yourself immediately, or call the cops and wait for them to arrive a few minutes or more later. This is in no way an anti-police sentiment.

Seriously, while you call 911 and wait for the police to show up, do you honestly think the burglar, rapist, mugger or murderer will also wait for the police to show up before they finish committing the act? Do you think they will willingly allow you to even make the phone call in the first place? I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that in a few cases, you will get your phone call off. But that is only if you had warning or someone else not immediately involved called it in.

More often than not, your opportunity to dial the phone will come after the incident has ended and the police will be able to come take your statement if you are still able to give one. The cops just cannot be everywhere at all times. It would be nice, but it ain’t happening.

The most troubling comment on this Florida home invasion story was some holier-than-thou guy that was quite offended by someone using the “minutes away” quote, claiming it was riot inciting.

“Who are you to think you are better at protecting yourself than the police?” was his follow up.

Are you serious? Obviously this individual has lived in a bubble his whole life and has never been in any situation where any sort of violence or crime has ever affected him, a loved one, or anybody he knew personally.

I would have to imaging that him facing armed home invaders at 2 AM in the morning that would not allow him to phone for help might be the only way to change his tune. Which is unfortunate, hopefully his bubble is never popped. Not all bad things go away when you turn off your television set. There are for real bad guys in the world.

Some people need that proverbial 2 x 4 to come crashing down on them. Preferably not in a “Last House on the Left” fashion.

And it’s not just William Wilberforce that will tell you “I told you so.”

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

The Big 3-0-0, Top 10 Blog Posts to Date

Sunday, February 21, 2010 Posted by Rob

I just looked at my published blog entry total, and this is the 300th blog post on Pepper Spray, Stun Guns and Tasers… Oh My!

I figure this is a good time to go back through the archives and possibly refresh some of the older posts and highlight what I would consider the Top 10 Blog Posts to Date.

10. Child Guard Remote Monitoring from April 26, 2007

This was the first blog post here. I started my business on November 2006. About 6 months later I decided to go the blog route. You gotta start somewhere…

9. Vanessa Hudgens, TASER self-defense advocate? from April 10, 2009

According to my Popularity Counter plugin, this post is the all-time most viewed blog post here, with a hit count of over 33K. Gotta love the celebrity name dropping effect, and I didn’t even have to put “Vanessa Hudgens Naked” in the post tags…

8. TASER Inventor Dies at 88 from Feb 16, 2009

This is also one of the more popularly viewed blog posts. When Jack Cover, the inventor of the TASER Device died, it was quite the news story and many people surfed in to read the scoop, earning a respectable 8K worth of hits.

7. Man Steals Burglars’ Getaway Van from Feb 15, 2009

This home burglary story was just funny. A guy was at home when a set of burglars broke into his house. He snuck out the back door, and when he crept to the front, he noticed the getaway vehicle was running. So he hopped in and took off with the police on his cell phone… Classic stuff.

6. Don’t Tase the Emu, Bro! from Aug 21, 2008

This blog post was rather short, but the picture it painted was pretty funny. You kinda have to check it out to see for yourself. The emu was not permanently injured…

5. Whack-a-Mom at Chuck E. Cheese from March 4, 2008

I am pretty obsessive of checking stats and seeing what keywords get hits to which posts. This post was kinda funny about 2 soccer moms starting a fight at a pizza joint, but when “whack your mom” came up in the search phrases I was slightly troubled. People actually search for things like that…

4. Failed Ninja Robbery Attempt from April 28, 2009

Ninja stories make good blog posts, especially when the ninja is lame.

3. Do You or Someone You Know Suffer From SDDS? from June 6, 2007

This was the post when I made up Self Defense Deficiency Syndrome (SDDS) to lightheartedly illustrate the point that some people are just afraid or unable to defend themselves when a situation requiring action to be taken. I don’t know, I thought it was funny

2. Stand Back! He’s Got a Spork! from Feb 28, 2008

Sometimes the stories you read in the news are funnier than anything you could make up. Could have been called “When Sporks Attack!”

1. 300 Reasons to Learn to Defend Yourself from Aug 27, 2007
and Conscience and Consequences of Self-Defense from Oct 15, 2008

These are two of my favorite blog posts. As I was going through posts, I just found way too many posts I liked. I am going to have to do up some categorized Top 10 lists, such as Top 10 Stupid Criminals in the News or Top 10 Why Defend Yourself blog posts.

I guess narrowing down 300 posts to 10 was harder than I though, especially since I wrote them all, and must like them all at least a little bit. Did I happen to miss your past favorite? I know there has to be some long time readers here that might remember a good older post. Let me know your thoughts.

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

More Power! Auuughhhh, Auuuughhhh, AUUUUUGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Saturday, February 20, 2010 Posted by Rob

In the words of the immortal Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor, “More Power! Auuughhhh, Auuuughhhh, AUUUUUGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!”

We have been working with the manufacturers and have just upgraded our some of our formidable stun gun products into even more powerful thug-whoopin’ tools. Even Tim Taylor is proud!

Our 350,000, 650,000 and our 950,000 volt Runt Stun Gun line has increased to 2.5 million, 3.5 million, and 4.5 million volts, including the now 4.5 Million volt Rechargeable Runt! Auuughhhh, Auuuughhhh, AUUUUUGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Our 950,000 volt Pretender Cell Phone Stun Gun has beefed its way up to 4.5 million volts, and our Stun Master Multi-Function Stun Gun was already in the 2.7 million range, but we cranked up the juice to take it to the 4.5 million threshold. Auuughhhh, Auuuughhhh, AUUUUUGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

You want more power, you got it.

So, what is the difference between a small 80,000 volt Stun Gun and a whopping 4.5 million volt Stun Gun?
Whether you are packing a 80K or a 4.5M, both stun guns will render your assailant helpless using less-than-lethal voltage from the device, but you’ll have to hold the 80,000 volt model several seconds longer than the 4.5 million volt stun gun.

Also consider this, stun guns are effective on many parts of the body. But giving yourself MORE POWER,you are giving yourself the best chance to get the better of your attacker. Applying the stun gun on a body part that has greater surface area, such as their chest, abdomen, groin, kidneys, or back, will garner greater results. Zapping an area such as the arm or leg may work fine, but these areas may not grant you the same amount of surface area that you will need to maintain contact for a few seconds. Limbs are also prone to be pulled away before the stun device discharges enough juice. You want to bury the stun gun as deep and as long as possible full the full effect, much to the dismay of your attacker.

Runt Stun Gun

Be Safe, Be Prepared, More Power to You!

Please Rob Me, I just left my house…

Thursday, February 18, 2010 Posted by Rob

I have most of the major social networking pages somewhere, not that I still use all of them. I have still, or have in the past used MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google Buzz, Digg, Technorati and probably a bunch more if I felt like checking all of my internet book marks.

To tell you the truth, it takes up way too much time trying to “stay connected”. But there are even apps that tie 2 or more of these sites together, which I suppose makes keeping up with friends, followers, and stalkers much easier. That way you can tweet a message and it automatically posts to your Facebook. Or you can status your Facebook and it will tweet it too. Hopefully you don’t have it set up to FB to Twitter that tweets back to FB which goes back to Twitter in an endless loop of insignificant social babble…

One of the latest Facebook/Twitter fads is called geolocation. Which is when you can download an app to your smart phone that grabs your precise physical location and tweet or status that spot to all of your friends. I have a Facebook buddy that does this all the time. He is always letting us know what restaurant he is waiting in line at, or other event he is hobnobbing around.

A while back, when he first started doing that, I thought, “Hrrm, “Ted” isn’t at home and he just told the world… and if you wait an hour or two, he’ll probably let you know when he is heading back.” Sure enough he did. Perfect time to rob his house, if you were into that sort of thing.

Usually your Facebook account is only full of your nearest and dearest friends, not 100s of casual acquaintances, and people you hardly know but sent to a friend request, right? …RIGHT?

What about those college kids that friend everyone on campus? Probably not the best course of action. You know how those mature co-eds act.

How likely would it be for some loser college “friend” to ransack your dorm room when they just saw your tweet that you and your roommate just took off for the long weekend?

Worse yet, leave it to some techno-nerd to one up the whole geolocation snooping. There is actually a website called Please Rob Me dot com. This site will filter out all the “I’m taking a shower” and motivational quote spam on Twitter and just get down to the nitty gritty. It takes all the real-time geolocationing info and displays them in a one-stop-shop list. Here is a snippet of the results from last night:

Listing all those empty homes out there

Recent Empty Homes

@HolzJS left home and checked in about a minute ago: I’m at Celebration Town Tavern (721 Front Street, Sycamore Street, Celebration). http://4sq.com/8BCs0A

@amisij left home and checked in about a minute ago: I’m at Kirkhof Center (GVSU, Allendale) w/ 2 others. http://4sq.com/6Xvr8B

@jacobkampen left home and checked in about a minute ago: Woot! #fb (@ Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) w/ 2 others) http://4sq.com/31ZCjK

@argonman left home and checked in about a minute ago: I’m at Edwards movie theater. http://4sq.com/bHeIQr

And of course there is a search box if you have a specific target in mind, perfect for selecting a burglary target, or narrowing down your night’s stalking route.

From their home page, you can click on the WHY link and get their reasoning for creating this site, which states their goal is to raise some awareness on the potentially dangerous issue of willy nilly geolocation spamming and have people think twice about how they use those services like Foursquare, Brightkite, Google Buzz etc.

The danger is when you get in the habit of publicly telling strangers where you are, and consequently where you are not… which is at home. “So here we are; on one end we’re leaving lights on when we’re going on a holiday, and on the other we’re telling everybody on the internet we’re not home.”

They also state their “intention is not, and never has been, to have people burglarized.” But it should make you wonder. Who is keeping tabs on you, especially when you are so freely giving out boatloads of personal information, intentionally or unintentionally.

Take a piece here, take a tweet there, read a couple social profiles, and then use Google. You’d be surprised how much info you can find on someone. I hope you have some sort of home security or a dog (real or fake) keeping an eye on things at the homstead.

I’m just waiting on the following:

@geotweeter is at the new restaurant, long wait to be seated, I may be here awhile.

@geoburglar is at @geotweeter’s house. Wonder if he’ll get back in time before I clean it out…

Be Safe, Be Prepared. Keep your geo tweets to yourself.

Kim Kardashian’s Air Marshall Buddy

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Posted by Rob

I spent 6 years in the military, and the media always bothered me. I wasn’t personally involved in any major military conflicts, but there were several instances when watching the news and I was like “WTF are they doing”?

You get Joe Reporter from CNN, on assignment in Iraq/Afghanistan/insert your favorite military hot spot, standing with the camera rolling, reporting live on what the next moves the US military is going to make. Sure, all of us in the US watching have no idea exactly where they are, but I bet all of those native to that country can easily recognize the landmarks and buildings in the background. Unless the news channel also displays the exact location in text under the reporter’s name.

Nothing like letting the enemy know what is going on right before it happens in the name of journalism.

Trust me, I don’t need to know before it happens. I’d rather have them successfully complete the mission, then you can report on it afterward, without jeopardizing soldier’s lives. Come on now.

This next Kim Kardashian story is probably nothing. I am betting the supposed Air Marshall that was on the plane sitting next to her was probably some loser trying to impress Kim Kardashian. “Hi Kim, Did you know I am an Air Marshall? *wink*wink*

So if you were Kim Kardashian, what would you do? Politely smile and ignore this obvious attempt to flirt with you? Or would you whip out your cell phone and Tweet this information on Twitter?

“I’m on the airplane…love wifi! I am sitting next to an Air Marshall! Jim the air marshall makes me feel safe!” tweets Kimmy to her 3 million some odd followers.

So after her followers started to berate her lapse of good judgment on outing what she thought was an undercover airline official, and possibly endangering the flight, she started to justify herself with a series of tweets, one saying she is probably the only (idiot) tweeting on the flight so no one will know.

I doubt the 10-second rule would have done Kim Kardashian any good. You know, where you wait 10 seconds before opening your mouth (or tweeting) something dumb? I’m betting it still would not have occurred to her to maybe refrain from spilling that tidbit of info.

You have to imagine that this so-called air marshall was not truly an air marshall, so no one was actually in danger on this LA to NY flight. I mean what else do you say to try to impress someone on a flight? A real air marshall should be able to maintain his composure and think up a better pick up line. “Um, nice shoes Kim, wanna…?”

Be Safe, Be Prepared, If you want to keep a secret, don’t tell the media or Kim Kardashian.

Cold Weather Crime Rates

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Posted by Rob

When the air gets frigid, and the snow starts to fly, it’s just a simple fact that things start to slow down. No one likes to brave the cold weather more than they have to. This in turn, means less people to target and fewer criminals out to commit their acts. Like supply and demand… and being lazy.

Sure there are still burglaries, muggings and whatever other nasty crimes going on in the winter, just less of them. Let’s face it criminals are lazy. You go out and get a job, work hard, make some money, cash your check and then some loser on the street mugs you and steals your wallet, iPod and cell phone. Why work when you can just rip off someone else who does? Hrrm, that kind of sounds like this redistribution of wealth crap, Obama’s answer to the US economic troubles? Well that’s another story.

Back to lazy criminals. So basically you have fewer criminals willing to camp out behind the bushes in the freezing cold or less hoodlums hanging out on the streets causing trouble because it just isn’t fun to stand around freezing your butt off. And it’s just too hard to run away with your loot in 2 feet of snow and on icy streets.

Many of the areas that have been recently affected by the sudden back-to-back(-to-back) Mid-Atlantic blizzards have noticed a temporary lull in criminal activity. Don’t get too excited, it won’t last long.

Once the streets get plowed or the snow starts melt, the stir-crazy thugs will be back in business. The economy isn’t getting any better, and the criminals are not getting any less lazy.

Once the good weather hits and spring has officially sprung (it isn’t too far off, no matter what that stupid groundhog says), the thugs will be back in full force.

Get yourself ready now; don’t wait until the streets are hopping.

If you are living in a location that isn’t experiencing Jack Frost Winter Wonderland conditions, you probably are not getting any seasonal breaks and should be tooled up year round. Just in case. You never know when the next lazy thug may target you for a redistribution of your wealth… or worse.

Be ready to redistribute your supply of pepper spray or voltage from your stun gun. Fair is fair, right?

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

Self Defense vs. Self Offense

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 Posted by Rob

The term Self Defense is actually a misnomer, what you really want is Self Offense. But it is 10 times harder to market self offense, everyone wants to hear self defense. It sounds nicer. To most people, offense is what the aggressive, black cowboy hat wearing bad guys do. Offense is what the street thugs with bad intentions do. No good person wants to be like the bad guys…

OK, so lets reverse the thinking for a minute. Do you want to chase or be chased? Think cheetah vs. antelope. The chaser always has the advantage, and the chased only has to be caught once. Then it is over. Dead antelope.

But what if the antelope decided that at the split second he was about to be chased – he would turn the tables and attack the cheetah? Sure the cheetah is stronger and faster, but what if the antelope forcefully and unexpectedly kicked the cheetah in the throat? Or gouged out his eyes? Hey, the cheetah started it. Or, less realistic for the antelope example, but when we revisit the human being scenario, what if the potentially chased person was armed with powerful pepper spray or a cell phone stun gun?

You want action to action, not reaction. As soon someone conveys their intent to harm you, BAM! It is on. Shift your gears to the offensive and make the creep sorry he made the mistake to mess with you. Be it with pepper spray, a TASER C2, a Stun Master stun gun or a flurry of martial arts strikes and kicks, let him have it.

Be Safe, Be Prepared, Take Control of the Situation.

Action to Action, it won’t make you a bad guy, and it may save your life.

Non-Believer Finally Changes Her Mind

Monday, February 15, 2010 Posted by Rob

Over the past several years, I have received many, many orders for self defense products. Whenever I get a new order, I check the name to see if I remember them as a past customer making a repeat purchase. If I remember the name, I’ll look back through previous orders to see what they purchased last time. More often than not, they are now buying something for a friend or family member the second or third time.

But this past weekend, I received a surprise order from a name I remembered for a different reason. We’ll call her Amanda. For about a year and a half, I have been receiving “hate mail” as I called it from good old Mandy on a fairly regular basis. I never really bothered me much, and I never felt the need to respond, but I’ve put up with her calling me violent, saying I promote violence, and even once calling me a “warmonger”, all because I sell pepper spray, stun guns and other less-than-lethal self defense weapons.

She obviously visited the website and blog rather often because she routinely commented on various new products and statements I have made on the blog over the past several months. All expressing negative opinions. I just kind of laughed her off, she seemed to have quite a bit a free time. I did wonder if she was singling me out, or going after other dealers too?

Like I said before, I never responded to her e-mails, but she was persistent nonetheless, seemingly knowing I was at least reading them. Since she never purchased anything from Worth Protection Security, I didn’t feel the need to waste anytime dealing with her critique. I’m in business to sell self defense products to willing customers. If I spent all my time trying to convince people that didn’t want to protect themselves that they should, I’d never get anything done. I’ll write some general persuasive blog posts to argue my case, but I’m not going to one-on-one argue with someone. Even If I feel my point is more correct .

Now that I mention it, it did seem like I hadn’t heard from her in awhile, so I guess I was about due for some sort of contact. So imagine my surprise, when the next time I see Mandy’s name, it is on a order form, actually buying some of the products she previously condemned?

Mandy wrote a rather long message in the comment field of the order, which was good, because I was rather shocked to she her purchase. In her comments, she very eloquently states that she was wrong in her past objections, and I was right. She went on to tell me that one of her closest friends was attacked and severely beaten late last month, and is still recovering in the hospital. She is expected to spend several more weeks in bed, but isn’t expecting any permanent damage.

Her friend did, however confess to Mandy “I wish I had something I could have used to defend myself.” Talk about a wake-up call, which Mandy says those words “hit her like a ton of bricks.”

Her order included 2 canisters of Mace Pepper Gel, a couple of Wildfire pepper spray key chains, and a couple other self defense products. I imagine she was tooling up herself and her friend at least.

Unfortunately, the non-believers and even the on-the-fencers wait until something up close and personal happens to themselves, a family member, or a friend before they decided to protect themselves. It took this brutal attack on a close friend to change Mandy’s mind, but it shouldn’t have had to get to that. But, some folks need brutally vivid evidence to walk right up to them and smack them straight in the face.

Mandy did mention that she fully intended to carry her personal protection items from now on, not just buying them and leaving them at home. That is extremely important. There is nothing worse than actually owning a self defense product, and not having it on your person when you need it most. Carrying a stun gun, TASER, pepper spray, or a telescopic steel baton should be as habitual as putting your wallet in your front pocket (tip for you), or grabbing your car keys on your way out the door. I’ll never go anywhere without first patting myself to make sure I have everything I need on me at all times, wallet, cell phone, keys, and self defense items.

This means even on short, quick runs to the convenience store to grab a coffee, or slurpie. That means even when you to go to the doctor’s or dentist’s office, or even the post office. I carry something on me everywhere I go, except for checking in at the airport (but you can pack self defense items in a checked suit case to be retrieved immediately after landing).

As the late, great SGM Ed Parker once said, “He who hesitates, meditates in a horizontal position.”

Don’t be the one that waits, don’t be the one that hesitates, and don’t let a friend, family member or yourself get severely beaten before you are ready to take action. Be Safe, be prepared, and act now. Protect yourself and loved ones now, and avoid Mandy’s situation.

Hopefully you may only need to protect yourself or a loved one once in your lifetime. Personally I hope you never have to, but wouldn’t you rather be ready for anything, instead of wishing you had something while lying in a hospital bed?

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

How To: Fighting Stance

Sunday, February 14, 2010 Posted by Rob

Your fighting stance is one of the most basic, yet most argued body positions in the martial arts. Every style of martial arts has their own variation of how to hold your hands, where to place your feet, and how to angle your body. And every martial arts practitioner will attempt to try to convince you why their stance is better than yours.

To a degree, each of these variations has it own merits, and fits nicely within the style and techniques of said art. However, many of these traditional martial arts do not translate very effectively to confronting an opponent on the street. I have practiced sport Tae Kwon Do for many years when I was a teenager. It was lots of fun, a good workout and I won lots of ribbons, medals and trophies.

While sparring in a tournament ring for points, you may lose a match and not get a prize. In a life threatening street fight, you could be seriously injured or lose your life. Don’t think a Billy Blank’s Tae Bo workout position will help you much. Sure it is great for cardo, not so great for real self-defense.

So let’s start with the basics. Turn your body to the side, step back with one foot, knees slightly bent, and hands up. Sounds easy enough right? Well, let’s break it down and go into some more detail. We are going to base this version of a fighting stance on an American Kenpo Karate Neutral Bow, but go ahead and simply keep calling it a fighting stance.

Assuming you are right-handed, the first thing you would do is fortify your stance by turning your left foot 45-degrees inwards. Next, you will want to step your right foot backwards, putting your power hand and leg in the back (more on striking in a later post). Contrary to many 90-degree facing styles, you will want your body facing 45-degrees towards your opponent.

Imaging you are straddling a line on the ground. If you were to look down, you want your front toe and your back heel to roughly line up on opposite sides of the imaginary line at that 45-degree angle. If your feet are too far to either side, correct your stance. The more you practice, the easier this becomes and you will soon not even think about it.

Your feet will be shoulder width apart, with your chest, hips, toes and knees facing 45-degrees. Your head will be facing directly in front of you, eyes on your opponent.

Turning to the side will make your body an even smaller width target, but staying at a 45-degree angle keeps more of your weapons available. This stance is slightly more of an open stance than turning completely sideways, but is far more functional with less wasted motion when using your rear arm or leg. Remember you have two feet, two hands, two knees and two elbows at your disposal.

One of the most important pieces of this stance is having a strong foundation. Bend your knees slightly and keep your feet approximately shoulder width apart. You do not want your feet too close or too far apart and throw off your balance. You want to feel comfortable and be able to move around freely and quickly.

Do not lock your knees and stay on the balls of your feet. This will help your speed and help prevent injury from a low kick. Bent knees still have some give; a locked leg has nowhere else to go. Keep this in mind when striking your opponent. If an attacker’s knee can no longer support him, he will be unable to fight or chase you. Two-way concept here.

Your weight should be distributed 50/50 between both of your feet, with your heels only slightly off the ground. Your shoulders should be square over your hips and your back should be straight. If you feel any twisting, leaning or other discomfort, you are probably out of position. Once you settle into it, this should be a very compact, comfortable and natural feeling stance.

The last major component is your hand positioning. You want to keep your guard up to protect your face, without losing protection to your body. Your front fist should be just below your eye level, with your arm bent at a 90-degree, but cocked at a 45-degree angle. Your back fist should be closer to your chin, with your elbow about a fist width from your body, arm also cocked at a 45-degree. Keep your pinkies facing towards your opponent; don’t twist your hand into an awkward position.

Resist the urge and correct any chicken flapping of the elbow. You will need to be able to block shots to your side, rib cage and other vital areas with minimum movement. Your front arm needs to be high enough to protect your face, but not obscure your view. Each arm will accommodate the slight adjustments needed to go up or down depending on the incoming attack, while still protecting your opponent’s main targets.

Remember to keep your hands close enough to your body so that you can properly block, but not too far away, leaving other parts of your body open for an attack. This will take practice, but eventually become instinct.

Don’t chamber your rear hand. If you don’t know what this is, good. There is no practical street application for this. Seriously. Also, if you are left handed, follow the previous directions in mirror image. Once you get good at one side, you will also want to practice your off side too. No exceptions, you do not want to be one sided.

There are many other considerations, especially when adding other stances, moving around, blocking and striking, but we have to start somewhere. “Putting up your dukes” is about as basic as we can get. Practice, practice, practice.

That is it in a nutshell, Fighting Stance 101. As I said earlier, there are several variations, some with minor tweaks, and some with major differences. The best fighting stance you can possibly use is the one you are most confident with and are successful at defend yourself with.

If you had to emulate the fighting stance of a famous martial artist, at least pick a successful UFC Mixed Martial Arts fighter with good form. Stay away from the Hollywood movie actors that have cool looking choreographed fight scene moves and crazy stances. I liked Kung Fu Panda as much as the next guy, but I’m not trusting any of his self-defense moves on the street.

In addition, the Karate Kid’s crane stance only worked once, and that was back in the 80s. Although if you busted it out on the street, your attacker might fall to the ground laughing and you might be able to get away. Not suggested however.

Remember, there is no shame in getting away, you know the saying, to live and fight another day. Nevertheless, if push comes to shove, and shove comes having to defend yourself, make sure you are ready.

It also wouldn’t hurt to sneak a canister of pepper spray, a stun gun or telescopic steel baton into your fighting stance. In fact, get yourself two steel batons and you can go all Jeff Speakman on an assailant. It would take some practice, but Jeff Speakman (American Kenpo Instructor/Actor) is the man. If you can find it, buy or rent The Perfect Weapon (1991). Last time I checked it was only available on VHS though. You can probably YouTube all the good clips if you want.

If you are looking for some more details, you can check out some of the instructional fighting DVDs available, such as Combat Karate with Dale Comstock.

Like I said previously, there are as many fighting stances as there are martial arts or fighting systems. Your basic goal is preventing your opponent from hitting you in the face, while allowing you to strike them in one of their vulnerable areas. If you can do that standing square forward with your arms at your side, more power to you.

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

Rachael Ray and her Vicious Attack Dog

Saturday, February 13, 2010 Posted by Rob

If Michael Vick was still involved on the fight circuit, he might be giving celebrity chef Rachael Ray a call to see if her red-and-white pit bull Isaboo is available.

Apparently this hell hound has attacked at least five other dogs, while going all Mike Tyson like in his last incident, biting off another dog’s ear.

Ray is now “grief-stricken” and afraid for her dog’s life, as he will likely be put down after his violent history. Ray was even injured in one of the previous attacks when she attempted to intervene in her dog’s antics.

This last time, the talk-show host was walking the pit bull down a Greenwich Village street in New York City.

“As the other dog walked by, Isaboo lashed out so quickly and ripped the other dog’s ear off before its handler could pull it away,” says a witness to the attack. Luckily a vet was able to reattach the victim dog’s ear.

Rachael Ray and her attorney husband, John Cusimano offered to pay the medical bills and any additional costs. Can you say lawsuit?

As bad at these several attacks on other canines is, Ray is extremely lucky that her precious Isaboo hasn’t yet attacked a person or worse yet, a child. Which seems may just be a matter of time, given his track record.

So next time to see Rachael Ray strolling down the street, or trying to peddle her All Natural Pet Food Line, make sure you have your Mace Muzzle canine repellent or an Ultrasonic Super Dogchaser before Isaboo makes a 30-second meal out of you or your dog.

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

Mountain Lion Pet a tad excessive?

Saturday, February 13, 2010 Posted by Rob

I’ve heard of some strange pets in the past, but every now and then someone just feels the need to go against the grain.

I have a dog, which is about as common as a household cat. But this guy in Glocester, Rhode Island took housecat to the extreme. He had a 200-pound lion locked up in a cage, housed in a shed behind his home. Apparently no one knew of this unusual pet besides the guy and his wife.

It probably wouldn’t have made the news except the guy recently died (unrelated to the lion) and his widow was unable to continue to take care of the wild animal. Or if the guy was still alive, and he got mauled or eaten by the lion, that would have gotten some press. I can hear the reading of the will now… “And to my wife, I leave my pet wild mountain lion.” The the wife is thinking, “Damn it! I was hoping the freakin’ lion would go to Cousin Earl…”

The widow ended up contacting an animal sanctuary in Florida last month to help, and experts from the Animal Planet television network came up and removed the female mountain lion from the home. The town’s animal control officer Michael Merchant didn’t even know what was going on until the whole ordeal was over.

So what would possess someone to capture a mountain lion and keep it as a pet? How much fun can a mountain lion possibly be? Its not going to play fetch, or cuddle up in your lap… And it’s probably not going to eat Purina One cat food either. What a pain. Unless you are Steve Irwin or something, he might have thought a mountain lion as a pet would work, although I think he prefers crocks.

Kinda reminds me of The Hangover movie when they kidnap Mike Tyson’s pet tiger. At least tigers are cool.

Shady Pepper Spray Deal

Friday, February 12, 2010 Posted by Rob

I was walking down the aisle between desks at my Dilbert cube job the other day. This co-worker sees me and waves me over to him.

“Hey man…” he whispers.

Playing along, I whispered back “What’s up?”

He looks around cautiously, lowers his head and voice, and whispers “Hey man, do you still sell those self defense products?”

Still playing along, I look side to side cautiously and whisper back “Yeah man, why are we whispering?”

He ignores my question and continues to whisper “Do you think I should buy some pepper spray for my wife?”

I thought it was kind of an odd question so I replied “I don’t know, do you think you should buy your wife some pepper spray?”, and yes I still humored him and whispered.

Smartly, he did answer this question by saying, I mean whispering “Yeah, sometimes she works late, and then stops off at the gym or grocery store. I don’t like her walking alone in the empty parking lots by herself.” I believe that’s about what I made out; I was getting kind of annoyed straining to hear him whisper.

At this point since we were being all secretive and shady drug dealer like, I wished I was wearing a long trench coat so I could look around cautiously and open up one side of the coat, and display my wares like they were stolen or fake Rolex watches. I would have pulled out my smart phone and let him look at the webpage on my phone, but I had let the battery run out overnight and had to leave it in my car charging.

Assuming he wouldn’t be comfortable going over to his cube and typing up the website on his PC since he was already nervous, I suggested that we head out to the parking lot during lunch and I could “hook him up”. There I go again sounding all drug dealer like… no wonder he kept whispering and looking around…

When we got out to my car, I handed him a catalog, and showed him a few items I had on hand. He found a few things he wanted, and another couple things I didn’t have on me that he wanted to order.

“I don’t suppose you take credit cards do you?” he asked.

This was the point I felt it necessary to point out that 1) these products are 100% LEGAL and didn’t need to whisper around about like he was looking for pot, and 2) yes I have a legitimate business, and take cash, check and yes, all major credit cards.

He kind of laughed and indicated he wasn’t exactly sure, but wanted some items to protect himself and his wife in case anything happened just the same.

“Oh, so all of these items aren’t just for your wife who works late?” I wanted to ask, but I figured I tortured this poor soul enough. I figure the lecture about “how carrying self-defense products do not make you less of a man” could wait until next time.

But this whole incident did shed some light on a common misconception some people must have. Self defense products aren’t just for the meek. Men and women can both benefit from arming themselves with pepper spray, stun guns, TASER devices or any other available self defense weapons.

Haven’t they ever seen Dogg the Bounty Hunter? He’s a pretty rough and tough man’s man, and he is always packing a can of Mace defensive spray or a telescopic steel baton… Of course he is willingly putting himself into harm’s way on a regular basis, so you can imagine he would routinely want to make sure he has an advantage.

Also, you won’t find a manly police officer without a firearm, pepper spray, TASER Device or some form of baton or billy club with them at all times while on duty (and probably a couple of those items when he is off-duty).

But even if you are Joe average citizen, it doesn’t mean you won’t find yourself in a compromising situation when you might need to defend yourself or a loved one. You never know, and you’d rather be safe, than sorry.

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

Infidelity and Facebook Cheating

Thursday, February 11, 2010 Posted by Rob

Remember that cell phone commercial awhile back, when a guy asked his buddy why his girlfriend was in the buddy’s favorite five? Then the phone rings while he is still holding it, and it is his girlfriend calling the buddy with the custom ringtone song “Secret Lovers”. It’s funny when it isn’t you.

What about other social networking sites, such as Facebook or Myspace? Not only do you have current friends, but people are finding all of their past high school friends, college buddies, current and past work associates… friend of friend acquaintances… not to mention old flames and past romantic partners.

“Facebook gives people who would cheat, or who might be on the fence about cheating, more opportunities,” says Lisa Boesky (aka TV’s Dr. Lisa), a clinical psychologist. There was also a study by Divorce Online which found that 1 out of 5 American divorces listed Facebook behavior as one of the causes.

I’ve seen the statistic that nearly 1/2 of marriages end in divorce. I’ve always doubted this, as I could never seem to count half of my friends or people I knew as being divorced, but it appears this might not be that far off.

Infidelity seems to be widespread, and ranges all the way from the down and out to billionaire sports stars such as Tiger Woods. Everyone seems to think the grass is greener on the other side.

So, how can this be prevented? Unfortunately you really can’t stop it. People are either going to cheat or not.

So what do you do if you suspect a cheating boyfriend or girlfriend? How exactly to do catch a cheating spouse? You can’t be everywhere all of the time, can you?

If this unfortunate event occurs, and you find yourself strongly concerned that something is going on, there are a number of surveillance options available to you.

Computer Spy Software

Advances in computer and communication technology not only allow your children to connect in a countless number of ways with complete strangers, it also creates opportunities for adults to cheat on spouses.

The IntelliSpy Computer Activity Tracking Software gives you the ability to track what is going on every time someone gets on the computer. You have the right to know what is going on. Protect your children from harm or catch a Facebook or other social networking cheater.

Features of this monitoring software include:

  • Key logging: see everything typed onto the keyboard… including emails, social networking activity, and private instant messages,
  • Screenshots: every minute, screen snapshots can be taken
  • Block web sites: limit access to inappropriate web sites for your child. This will not work on adults, as they would figure out something is up if you block Facebook
  • Completely Stealth: even if someone unknowingly exits the program or shuts down the computer, the program will restart.

Hidden Camera Surveillance

If the affair is occurring outside of the home, your hidden camera options are limited. If you suspect something is going on at home when you are at work or gone away on business, an all-in-one DVR hidden camera may do the trick.

Hidden camera surveillance has never been so easy to set up. With other hidden camera systems, you needed to hook them up to a VCR or DVD recorder to record what the camera sees. With the DVR hidden cameras, the built in DVR that records directly to a standard 8 GB SD card.

You literally place the DVR hidden camera where you want it, plug the unit in, point it in the right direction and press record on the included remote control. It doesn’t get any easier than this. Choose from many covert and unassuming models, including an alarm clock radio, wall clock, desk light, or an air purifier fan.

It sucks to have to resort to these kind of actions, but if you suspect something and want to know the truth, nothing says guilty like screen shots or digital video.

Be Safe, Be Sure, Be Prepared.

Observe and Report in Seattle Bus Station

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 Posted by Rob

If you like Seth Rogen movies and haven’t seen “Observe and Report”, it’s pretty good. Much better than “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” in my opinion. Both movies poke fun at the rent-a-cop stereotype.

However, the following rent-a-cop story from Seattle is no laughing matter.

Surveillance video captured a brutal assault on a 15-year-old girl by a group of 10 teenagers in an underground Seattle Metro bus tunnel. Apparently the altercation started street level, and eventually made it’s way into the Westlake Station.

The victim was being harassed by the group of 8 guys and 2 girls in a department store, and they followed her into the bus station where the verbal assault turned viciously physical.

The victim is pushed off of the platform, into the bus lanes, and then gets mercilessly beat down, at least 10 punches to the face and head, kicked and stomped in the head a 1/2 dozen times, and then as the victim lies motionless on the ground, she gets stomped in the head again for good measure.

When they were finished, the gang of hoodlums took off with the girls purse, cell phone and iPod.

How can such a travesty occur at 7PM at night? Weren’t there any bystanders that could have come to her aid? Weren’t there any security guards on duty?

Of course there was. A bus full of people watched the events unfold from the safety of the bus. Worse yet, at least three contract security guards, in uniform (bright yellow jackets, big bold SECURITY written across the back) stood by and Observed, and called in a Report by radio, but offered no form of assistance what-so-ever.

“All of the passengers, we were all up against the side looking, like, who is going to do something? Do something, do something!” said a witness that was sitting in the parked bus next to the attack. “Why on earth are there three security guards standing there watching it? And actually allowing her to come back and kick her in the head again!”

Even when the beating is over, and the guards could safely do something, you see on the video that none of the guard even bend down to check on the girl to see if she is breathing or needs any help.

“Really? You’ve got three male security guards and there’s a young girl getting kicked in the head, lying on the ground, motionless? And they couldn’t do anything? Doesn’t seem like security,” says the witness.

The guards from Olympic Security Services are not trained police officers or even Metro Transit employees. Apparently this is quite the cushy job, just hang around in the tunnel and talk on the radio. Not like they have to secure anything.

“If you’re not there to help out in these circumstances, then why are you there?” says the witness. Good question.

According to their outdated contract, the guards are under “observe and report” orders and are not supposed to get involved.

“You look at what’s happening to the victim and you say something got to be changed, that’s just not going to be acceptable. We’ve had that ‘observe and report’ for years in our contract and this incident clearly shows that we need to change that.” says Metro Transit General Manager Kevin Desmond.

The opinion of most of the people who’ve seen the surveillance video commented that common decency should have prevailed in this incident, not contractual language.

Authorities were able to track down a number of the assailants and make a couple of arrests. They also report that the girl will be OK.

So what can we do differently here?

First off, if the $10 an hour rent-a-cop security detail isn’t getting trained or paid enough to actually do a damned thing, get them the hell out of there. Use the combined saved salary and stick a real cop or two in there.

Or you can train the security guard to do his job, pay him a real wage and give him some pepper spray, telescopic steel baton and a TASER device. I still can’t believe they just stood there, trained or not.

What ever happened to people like that good Samaritan in San Diego? How can a bus full of people just sit there with their faces pressed up against the windows watching?

How old is old enough to carry self-defense items?

It wouldn’t be the best idea to further arm the teenage hoodlums that attacked the 15-year-old girl. But what about the victim? Well, it would depend on the individual. If you feel your child is mature enough to handle carrying a key chain pepper spray, you never know when it would come in handy. Typically personal alarms are suggested for younger teens, but in this case, I doubt an alarm would have drawn any additional attention.

By definition, self-defense, means just that. The art of defending yourself. Obviously you can’t always rely on others to come to your aid, even in a crowded bus station, with security guards standing around eating doughnuts.

When seconds count, the real cops are minutes way at best.

Be Safe, Be Prepared to Defend Yourself.

Cheap Electronics, Good for Consumers, Bad for Burglars

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 Posted by Rob

British crime research has recently reported that the influx of cheap electronic goods coming out of Asian countries may have affected the criminal standard operation procedures.

James Treadwell, a University of Leicester criminology lecturer explains that while a profit could be easily turned in the 1980s and 90s, cheap labor in China and Taiwan has made traditional home burglary less profitable today.

“Gradually, the prices of such goods has fallen so low as to they almost have no resale value. If you can buy a DVD player for 19.99 pounds ($32 US), it’s simply not worth stealing,” says Treadwell.

A British crime survey has reported a decline in domestic burglary over the past decade during a public interview. These numbers were applauded by the labor government, citing a crackdown on crime must have been successful.

However, there has been an increase in personal robbery and muggings. Treadwell attributes this to an effective “career change” by criminals.

Instead of breaking into homes, these crooks are now simply targeting smaller but pricier items such as iPods, cell phones, and other expensive gadgets that people commonly carry around with them.

This makes sense. Have you ever looked at the actual price of those fancy new smartphones? Sure you are getting a deal when you sign up for new service and get a free phone. Or when you upgrade to a new 2 year cellular agreement and are only charged $150 for the phone, but look at the actual retail price without all the discounts. Those are $400-600 phones. The 64GB iPod touch runs $399.

“It is these expensive, personal items, which are the most attractive to thieves today as they still retain value and can therefore be sold on, igniting a career change for criminals from the more traditional household burglaries to personal muggings,” says Treadwell.

It even appears that dogs are not immune to crime either. I just read a report about a terrier in Brooklyn who was mugged. Apparently the owner tied the pooch up outside of a supermarket, while she ran inside to grab a gallon of milk.

A few short minutes later, the woman exited the store to find her shivering little doggie missing his $25 leather trimmed, green wool coat and belt.

“How could anyone steal a coat off someone’s back in the freezing cold?” the 42-year-old owner reported to the local paper. “I was so angry, but in the end I was grateful that it was just the coat and not him.”

So in the case of the dog, he just got screwed by his owner. Thanks for leaving me unattended.

But you have a choice, and you have several self-defense options. On the cheap, for under $10 you can arm yourself with a key chain pepper spray. For under $60, you can get your hands on Stun Master Multi-Function Rechargeable Stun Gun. If safety is a higher concern than the price tag, you can always go the Vanessa Hudgens route and get yourself a C2 TASER. As I’ve said before, Your Life is Worth more to us than the Cost of a TASER Device. And it won’t even be the most expensive gadget in your pocket.

Be Safe, Be Prepared.

German Thief Pulls Hot Cup of Coffee on Cashier

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 Posted by Rob

This is one of the more unusual hold-ups, but I guess it is feasible seeing that it worked… a thief actually robbed an amusement arcade, wielding a cup of hot coffee in the German town of Hamelin. Nope, I can’t make this stuff up if I tried.

Stick 'em up!

“He wasn’t going to pour coffee over her, he was going to hit her with the cup,” said a police spokesman.

Really? You think the 26-year-old female attendant who was alone in the arcade was scared of the paper cup? Not about getting burned by the steaming hot coffee? Hrmm?

Apparently the guy ordered the coffee, and once the cup of joe was in his possession, threatened her with the beverage and forced her to open the register. He fled with the coffee and an undisclosed amount of cash in hand.

I don’t believe I recall a similar incident of coffee being used as a weapon, just the infamous McDonald’s coffee spill. Remember when the woman dumped a cup of coffee in her lap and sued for a million dollars because her cup of hot coffee was too hot? Perhaps Goldilocks should have stuck with the iced coffee, but that might have been too cold.

Too bad the cashier at the arcade didn’t have a TASER device on her. The thief probably would have spilled the coffee on himself while getting zapped… but wait, then he could sue the arcade… sigh.

Be Safe, Be Prepared, Be careful of hot coffee.

Boys Will Be Boys, Even if they are 21-year-olds

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 Posted by Rob

Apparently snow ploys can handle a couple feet of snow in the middle of a blizzard, but start throwing snowballs at it, and game over.

Two Virginia College students are facing 1 to 5 years in prison if convicted of pelting a city snow plow and an unmarkerd police car with snowballs. This felony snowball assault occured this past Saturday during the unusual blizzard conditions recently plaguing the Mid-Atlantic.

Snowmageddon, I believe Obama called it. So much for global warming when Virginia has been pounded harder than New Hampshire this winter season…

Police report that the two students, Charles Gill and Ryan Knight first began to playful launch snowballs at the oncoming city snow plow. The plow driver then called the police, who soon arrived on the scene of the snowy onslaught in an unmarked police car. The snowballs continued to fly hitting the police car too, until the assailants were apprehended and charged with felony counts of throwing objects at occupied vehicles.

It looks like more snowballs may fly later this week, as another freak snow storm is about to dump anther foot or two on the area. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…

Be Safe, Be Prepared, Watch out for snowballs.
