Important Child Safety Points to Consider

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 28 May, 2008

Ensuring the safety of your child is one of the
most difficult but important aspects of parenting.
It would be nice if we could train and arm our
children with some pepper spray or a stun gun
and feel safe sending them out into the world,
but we all know that is not the case.

Children are inherently trusting or easily convinced
that something would be okay, even if at first it
appears not. The old “man in a van with candy”
scenario isn’t too far of a stretch.

What are the most important things parents
should tell children about safety?

1. Always check first with a parent, guardian, or
trusted adult before going anywhere, accepting
anything, or getting into a car with anyone.

2. Do not go out alone. Always take a friend with
when going places or playing outside.

3. Say no if someone tries to touch you, or treats
you in a way that makes you feel scared,
uncomfortable, or confused. Get out of the situation
as quickly as possible.

4. Tell a parent, guardian, or trusted adult if you
feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused.

5. There will always be someone to help you, and
you have the right to be safe.

What should a parent know when talking to a
child about safety?

1. Don’t forget your older children. Children aged
11 to 17 are equally at risk to victimization. At the
same time you are giving your older children more
freedom, make sure they understand important
safety rules as well, online as well as offline in the
real world.

2. Speak to your children in manner that is calm
and non-threatening. Children do not need to be
frightened to get the point across. In fact, fear can
thwart the safety message, because fear can be
paralyzing to a child.

3. Speak openly. Children will be less likely to
come to you about issues enshrouded in secrecy.
If they feel that you are comfortable discussing the
subject at hand, they may be more forthcoming.

4. Do not teach “stranger danger.” Children do not
have the same understanding of “strangers” as
adults; the concept is difficult for them to grasp.
Based on what we know about those who harm
children, people known to children and/or their
families actually present greater danger to children
than do “strangers.” It is much more beneficial to
children to help them build the confidence and
self-esteem they need to stay as safe as possible
in any potentially dangerous situation they encounter
rather than teaching them to be “on the look out”
for a particular type of person.

5. Practice what you preach. You may think your
children understand your message, but until they
can incorporate it into their daily lives, it may not
be clearly understood. Find opportunities to practice
“what if” scenarios. If an incident occurs in your
community and your child asks you about it, speak
frankly but with reassurance. Explain to your children
that you want to discuss the safety rules with them,
so that they will know what to do if they are ever
confronted with a difficult situation.

6. Teach your children that safety is more
important than manners. In other words, it is more
important for children to get themselves out of a
threatening situation than it is to be polite. They also
need to know that it is okay to tell you what happened,
and they won’t be tattletales.

7. Make sure your child knows how to dial 911 and
ask for help. This is a skill that can be taught at a
relative early age. Make sure they know how, when
and why this is necessary.

One self defense product on the market that may actually
have some merit as a viable tool for a child would be a
personal alarm. As long as the child is mature enough to
realize that it is not a toy to be sounded for fun, personal
alarms
are electronic devices that emit an extremely loud
siren-like sound.

The loud sound may draw much needed attention to the
situation and increases the risk of getting caught to the
assailant. The assailant would not like drawing attention
to himself and may flee the immediate area. Nothing is
foolproof, but every little bit helps. Hopefully your child
is armed with enough knowledge and tools to prevent
or escape any unfortunate situation that arises.

As your child grows up and goes away to college, you
may wish to consider some more functional and
powerful self defense options.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Yours in safety,

Rob

Are You Listening?

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 11 March, 2008

For quite some time now I have been telling people how
something as simple as carrying a small pepper spray or
stun gun could save their life, prevent a mugging or
similar act of violence. We have many products from
pepper sprays, stun guns, tasers, personal alarms and
pocket knives, all designed to keep you safer than going
at it alone.

I have posted ads, articles, webpages, blog postings,
and used word of mouth…some select few get it. Still,
more often than not, the message falls on deaf ears,
and people who should know better continue with
behaviors that will eventually make them a victim.

I saw this little story the other day from England
and thought I would pass it along.

There’s always someone who thinks good advice doesn’t
apply to him. For example, if a doctor advises not to
go near a flame, as you are going to be covered with
flammable material, most people would take this advice,
and not strike a match until the flammable material
had been removed.

However, Phillip, 60, knew better than his doctor.
Phillip was in the hospital to treat a skin disease,
the treatment consisting of being smeared in a paraffin
based cream. Phillip was warned that the cream would
ignite, so he definitely should not smoke.

But he just couldn’t go without that cigarette.

Smoking was not permitted anywhere in the ward, but he
took this setback in stride, and sneaked out on a fire
escape. Once he was hidden, he lit up… and peace
descended as he got his nicotine fix. Things didn’t
start to go downhill until he finished his cigarette,
when he ground it out with his heel.

The paraffin creme had been absorbed by his clothing.
As his heel touched the butt, fumes from his jammies
ignited. The resulting inferno “cremated” his skin
condition, and left him with 1st degree burns over most
of his body.

He died in intensive care.

Some People Just Don’t Listen.

Personal protection products can save your life.

Are you listening?

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to
you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection
could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth
Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your
personal well-being?

Yours in safety,

Nevada Tragedy Prompts Public Awareness

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 20 February, 2008

People in Reno, Nevada are buying up pepper spray and stun guns in droves lately. Apparently fearing for their safety after the killing of Brianna Denison by a serial rapist, many young women are looking for any means possible of fending off a possible attack.

One of the more popular models are the half-ounce canisters in leather cases that can be attached to a key chain. Other small, easily carried stun guns and personal alarms are also popular and effective means of disabling an assailant or calling attention and help to the scene.

Most importantly, the women who are purchasing these products must educate themselves and practice drawing their self defense items and practice deploying or aiming their product. Just having one of these items is not enough, if when faced with a dangerous situation, the person is unable to effectively use the item.

Usually reading the instructions provided, a simple internet search for information regarding your self defense product and familiarizing yourself with correctly handling the item should make you comfortable enough and improve your chances of fending off someone wishing to do harm to you or a loved one.

Sadly, it took a very unfortunate event in NV to make people aware of the need to carry some sort of defensive tool for their personal protection. I always say I wish everyone had some pepper spray or a stun gun with them at all times, and I also hope that they never have to actually use it to defend themselves.

The harsh reality of it, it there is always the chance that something bad could happen. Some people are prepared ahead of time, some people are not. Which are you?

If you are not carrying, you should.

New Year’s Resolutions: Personal Safety for Yourself and Family!

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 2 January, 2008

Happy New Year! If you haven’t made your New Year’s Resolutions yet, It is about time to start, even though many will soon end up becoming forgotten. As well as the ever popular traditional resolutions of getting a better job, getting into shape or giving up smoking, drinking or some other bad habit, a vow to become equipped to sufficiently defend yourself or your family should rank high on your list.

Are you highly confident that you could effectively protect yourself, your spouse, your child or any loved one from a robber, carjacker, rapist, intruder, kidnapper, terrorist or anyone else with malicious intent? The statistics are quite alarming:

One violent crime occurring every 22.2 seconds, a property crime every 3.2 seconds, a larceny-theft every 4.8 seconds, a burglary every 14.4 seconds, a motor-vehicle theft every 26.4 seconds, an aggravated assault every 36.6 seconds, a robbery every 1.2 minute, a forcible rape every 5.7 minutes, and a murder every 30.9 minutes. (2006 FBI Crime Clock Stats)

Self defense products and personal safety equipment are an unfortunate necessity in today’s society. In many cases, a simple and effective deterrence mechanism may be the difference between becoming a victim or preventing a crime before it has a chance to start. Whether a stream of pepper spray into the face of a would be attacker, a zap with a stun gun into the attacker’s side, or a loud audible alarm drawing unwanted attention to the attacker, scaring him away or bring additional aid – you can NOT afford to be unprepared.

Preparation is the name of the game. You would not take a test without studying, build a house without plans, or travel on a vacation without packing your suitcase. Why would you not take simple steps on preparing a plan of personal self defense? This is one resolution that is simple to keep and could quite easily become a matter of life and death.

There are various types and sizes of pepper sprays, stun guns and personal alarms, granting a perfect fit for any individual need and preference. They even make a perfect gift for anyone you are concerned with their safety. Help someone else keep one of the most important resolutions they could make.

Don’t forget to properly safeguard your home or business also. There are home alarms, hidden cameras, nanny cams, spy and surveillance equipment perfect for any situation or application.

Rest In Peace Crocodile Hunter

Posted by Rob on Thursday, 6 September, 2007

The first anniversary of the Crocodile Hunter’s death is upon us. Steve Irwin, environmentalist and television “crocodile hunter” was killed one year ago by a stingray barb that pierced his chest during filming on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. More lethal than any stun gun or
taser could ever be accused of…

Irwin, who was 44 when he died, became world-famous for his daring stunts involving dangerous animals. Deadly insects, poisonous snakes, and of course crocodiles as his nickname implies, were all subject to his entertaining and educational escapades.

One of the things we need to remember here is Steve Irwin was a professional. “Don’t try this at home” should have been prominently displayed during every second of every episode. Steve grew up handling animals and made it a career of learning and teaching everything he could about animals to his family and everyone that watched his TV shows.

Then the unfortunate happens. A freak accident, happening without warning and too fast to defend against. While swimming in the ocean with stingrays, as he has many times in the past, tragedy, in the form of a stingray, quite literally struck.

Could it have been avoided? Sure, Steve Irwin could have not shown up for work that day. He could have hidden in his house if he was scared, but that was not Steve Irwin.

Did Steve miss a tell-tale sign while swimming with the stingray that it was about to attack? Probably not, but perhaps. No one will ever know for sure, but Steve Irwin was as prepared for that encounter as he ever was in the past 1000 encounters with any other wild animal. He wasn’t armed with a Kevlar vest, but he was armed with knowledge and awareness. Just something unexpected happened. It could have happen to anyone.

And similar instances happen everyday, in the ocean or walking down the street. Working as a TV host, or a mail man. Or a business professional, or real estate agent.

How prepared are you to handle a sudden, unexpected situation? Hopefully you have more that 1/10 of a second to react to a stingray barb like Steve, but are you armed with the knowledge or tools to protect yourself while living your normal day to day existence?

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Serial Killers, Self Defense and Halloween

Posted by Rob on Wednesday, 5 September, 2007

Labor Day is over. Where did this past summer go? Halloween is just around the corner, then Thanksgiving and soon after Christmas. I’m not quite ready for that yet.

But speaking of Halloween, Rob Zombie just released his remake of the 1978 classic horror movie, aptly titled, Halloween.

If you missed the original movie, the basic plot is about the psychotic murderer Michael Myers, institutionalized since childhood for brutally killing his sister when he was six. 15 years later, he escapes and goes off on a mindless rampage through his old Illinois town.

I can only imagine that this 2007 Rob Zombie remake will be brought to the next level and updated to the current horror/slasher movie standards as only Rob Zombie can deliver.

Although all of these psychotic serial killers in the movies become widely sensationalized and larger than life, such as Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, lets not forget there are real life super villain serial killers.

Some gain fame and notoriety in the media and become household names, such as Charles Manson, Son of Sam and Richard Ramirez. Others go slightly under the media’s widespread and frenzied radar but are non-the-less just as prolific and dangerous.

What all of these serial killers do have in common, real or cinematic, are that serial killers do not stop until they are captured or killed. Unlike other lesser criminals, serial killers are driven to kill, maim and/or torture without and care or concern for their victims.

Of course true serial killers make up a small part of the population, but those that do have the potential to destroy many lives. If you were to ever face a psychopath, it is no longer just about simple self defense, it is kill or be killed.

I have always hated those horror flicks when the murderer gets hit in the head or shot in the arm and falls down. Then their prey turns their back and thinks it is over. They don’t run away, they don’t watch the body, or don’t otherwise ensure the attacker is incapacitated.

If your attacker is using physical force, assume he’s trying to kill you. Assume he is trying abduct you so he can torture and kill you later.

Given the chance, fight back hard and make plenty of noise. If you can’t finish them off, hurt them badly enough that you can get away. Then get away and call for help. Do not stick around. Call for help in a safe place.

Those superhuman, unstoppable killers in the movies are fun to watch, if you like that kind of entertainment. Dealing with one in real life is another story. It doesn’t have to end in a bloodbath or victims strewn all over town. Self defense training and self defense weapons can take away a killer’s advantage and even the playing field, as well as improve your odds of survival.

Heaven forbid, if you ever find yourself in a situation warranting a kill or be killed mindset, make sure you are prepared. Mentally, physically and materially. Learn some basic self-defense moves, learn how to deploy your pepper spray or stun gun. Learn how to get away.

Become a serial killer’s worst nightmare. Someone who is ready and able to fight back and defend your own life or the life of your loved ones.

What Does Not Kill You, Makes You Stronger

Posted by Rob on Tuesday, 4 September, 2007

Let’s be realistic, life is a contact sport. This is not just a catch phrase for some sports drink.

The old adage “Only the strong survive” is alive and well, and that’s healthy. And that will always be the case, whether we are talking about sports, business or life in general. Healthy competition keeps everyone on their toes. It keeps everyone constantly striving, developing, and innovating. You keep one eye on the market and the other on your competition. Somewhere we are starting to lose this…

Another elementary school in Colorado has banned playing tag on its playground. Playing tag?!? Apparently some children are complaining they were harassed or chased against their will.

“It causes a lot of conflict on the playground,” says the assistant principal of the school.

Other running games are still allowed but if students start to chase each other, a playground aid with have to step in…

At least two parents complained about this ridiculous ban, but sadly most parents and children didn’t have a problem with this.

In 2005, two other Colorado elementary schools near this latest district in Colorado Springs did away with tag and similar games in favor of alternatives with less physical contact.

School officials are saying this move encourages students to play games and reduces playground squabbles. But what are we really teaching our children by sheltering them from the real world? How to grow up in a bubble? How to not stand up for yourself or get ahead in the world?

What happens when these kids that weren’t allowed to play tag, football, or other normal childhood activities grow up and are confronted with other real world situation that may involve some physical contact?

The playground lady is not going to be there to blow the whistle at the guy looking to rape, rob or otherwise injure you on the street. In the real world, not all the sheltering
rules are going to adhered to.

Is this person going to know better to run away or are they going to sit down and cry? Are these kids going to grow up and have enough nerve to fight back when that is the only option left at their disposal?

These children are our future. These weak willed, avoid conflict at all cost minded people are going to run our corporations and government. Do you think children in the
Middle or Far East are being brought up this way? Not on your life.

We need to nip this in the bud and prepare our children and ourselves for the REAL WORLD, where things sometimes take a turn for the worst. Where someone might need to take a stand for himself or herself and not rely on someone else to show up and fix it. Where people are prepared for the worst, and know how, when and what steps to take to get through it.

This is America, the greatest country in the world, founded by strong action-oriented men, who fought back against opposing forces and took a stand for what was right. Men who played tag and other contact sports as kids. Men who grew up strong and able bodied by preparing for the world as they knew it.

What has changed in the past couple hundred years? Outlawing Tag is not the answer, you pansy.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?

Et Tu, Brute? Actor Playing Brutus Stabs Himself

Posted by Rob on Friday, 31 August, 2007

As Julius Caesar lay dead, Brutus was talking to his co-conspirators about swords and blood. A common scene from this famous play.

Uncharacteristically, in the middle of the scene, the actor playing Brutus paused and excused himself, saying “I seem to have stabbed myself.” That’s not part of the play as I remember it.

The actor (and amusingly also the director) accidentally sliced his leg open with the knife he was using in an outdoor performance of “Scenes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar” this past week in Aspen, Colorado.

He tried to honor ‘the show must go on’… “but my boot was filling up with blood and I was flubbing my lines, wondering if I was going to pass out, wondering if the audience could see the blood.”

“That’s what you get for trying to kill Caesar,” he said.

Typically the actors normally don’t use real knives; however, this scene was painstakingly(?) set up so that none of the performers were close enough to hurt each other. Opps.

“But I hadn’t thought an actor might stab himself,” said the clumsy actor.

Although Brutus may be limping for the next couple performances, the show will continue. Hopefully with a less-than-lethal prop knife.

Knives are serious weapons, even in the hands of unskilled wielders. Great caution must be used in any incident involving one. Best bet is to run, if you can. Next would be a counter-weapon with some distance capability, such as some pepper spray.

Although possibly effective, a stun gun would require you to get up close and personal, not necessarily where you want to be when he is waving some metal. 8-10 feet away spraying some ultra-hot Wildfire pepper spray is where I’d rather be.

You never know. You may be at an outdoor play in the park, or walking to your car in a dark parking lot. When the situation arises, make sure you are tooled to take care of matters.

You might even be in a bathroom stall next to a Congressmen with happy feet. You never know when you might need to unleash a whoopin’.

It would be nice to believe that nothing will happen to you, but the reality of it is that an ounce of protection could be worth more than a pound of cure. What is Worth Protection to you? Your belongings? Your family? Your personal well-being?
